Plattsburgh State stumbles at Middlebury, 1-0

Plattsburgh State did not concede a goal for 445 consecutive minutes before today's 1-0 defeat.
Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Plattsburgh State women's soccer team challenged last years final four participant Middlebury Tuesday evening, giving the Panthers all they could handle before allowing a late goal to fall 1-0.
 
In a gritty contest the Cardinals opened the first half slow. Middlebury was able to control most of the play in the first half out shooting the Cardinals 9-4.
 
Middlebury had a chance to score in the 44th minute when sophomore forward Adrianna Gildner got past the Plattsburgh State defense. Her shot come inside the box but Danielle Schmitt was able to handle it.
 
Lindsey Bushey offered a glimmer of hope midway through the first half for the Cardinasl as she took a shot from 25 yards out that just missed the top left corner by inches.
 
The second half experienced a more explosive Cardinals offense. They opened the second half with several quick scoring chances.
 
In the 48th minute Anissa Hartmann dribbled down the right side sneaking by her defender before her shot ultimately hit the right side of the net.
 
Plattsburgh State quickly retained possession as senior Ashley Pagano tried the left side this time. Her cross in the 49th minute ended up hitting the side of the net.
 
The Panthers were able to move the ball up the field after that, creating a solid scoring chance of their own. Hannah Robinson was one-on-one with Schmitt before being denied by the Washingtonville, N.Y. native.
 
In an up and down second half Plattsburgh experienced its best scoring chance all day. Hartmann found herself unmarked in the middle of the box. She received a cross from the right side that she one-timed just over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
 
Plattsburgh State stayed aggressive though, getting another scoring chance in the 72nd minute. This time it was from the freshman Brooke Knight. She sent a firecracker from the right side that Middlebury goalkeeper Kate Reinmuth fought off with a full extension diving save.
 
Middlebury weathered the storm and finally tallied a score in the 80th minute. After receiving a free kick in their own defensive end they quickly turned a counterstrike into a goal from the foot of Gildner.
 
The Woodinville, Wash product took a pass from Molly Parizeau on the right side of the field before she turned a fired a shot into the upper 90 over Schmitt's right hand.
 
The Plattsburgh State's defense saw its scoreless streak come to an end at 445 consecutive minutes. This was only the second goal Schmitt has allowed this season as she ended the day with 11 saves. Both of the Cardinals defeats this year have came on the road in 1-0 defeats (St. Lawrence 8/29 & Middlebury 9/16).

Middlebury moved to 3-2 on the year as the Cardinals saw its four-game win streak come to end and now are 4-2.
 
Plattsburgh State will hit the road for the third-straight time as they travel to Skidmore to take on the Thoroughbreds Saturday before returning home and starting SUNYAC play against Potsdam.
