Box Score 2 ONEONTA, N.Y. - There was no lack of run support this time for Plattsburgh State starter JD Jenkins who fired a complete game and took the potency out of Oneonta State's bats in an 11-1 victory as part of a doubleheader split with the Red Dragons at Oneonta High School on Saturday afternoon.
Jenkins improved to 2-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.48 with the win as the Cardinals moved to 8-13 and 3-4 in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons took game one 6-2 and wound up with an overall mark of 6-13 as well as a 2-1 SUNYAC record at the end of the day.
GAME ONE: Oneonta State 6, Plattsburgh State 2 (9 inn.)The first of four Oneonta State errors in the tilt allowed the Cardinals to draw first blood in the opener of their third conference series of 2014.
Nick Lupo struck for the first hit of the day when he laced the first offering he saw from Steve Ascher to left field. After he advanced to second base, Jeremy Rodriguez drilled a fly ball toward a trio of converging Red Dragon fielders.
Oneonta's shortstop had a good bead on the ball, but saw it slip out of his glove allowing Lupo to come around and make matters 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
Early on, it appeared as though the sole run would hold up if Plattsburgh State starter Will Flynn had anything to say about it. The junior out of Peru, N.Y., held the Oneonta State lineup in check early on and established a nice groove once the fourth inning rolled around.
Flynn racked up all three of his punch outs during the fourth and fifth frames where he sat down six consecutive Red Dragons.
The trouble for Flynn, though, began in the home portion of the sixth innings when he hit the first batter he faced. An out was registered before Flynn issued his first of two walks in the frame. That set the stage for Christopher Orlando who put Oneonta State on top for good by mashing a two-run double to right-center field.
Jon Hailligan knocked in the game-winning score for the Red Dragons when he deposited the 0-0 offering from Flynn into the right-center field gap to make matters 3-0. Billy Reidel picked up a pair of RBIs before the inning came to a close by way of yet another two-run double.
Yuya Osawa was able to scratch across the only other Plattsburgh State run when his sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh plated Zach Hieb to make matters 5-2. The Red Dragons quickly regained their four-run edge in the bottom of the inning when Orlando slapped an RBI single through the left side of the Cardinals' infield.
Flynn dropped to 1-3 on the season as he gave up five runs on five hits and four walks in 5.1 innings of action. Ascher improved to 4-1 by working through the entire nine-inning bout and striking out 12.
Brian Latulipe finished 2-for-3 at the plate and accounted for exactly two-thirds of the Cardinals' total hits.
GAME TWO: Plattsburgh State 11, Oneonta State 1 (7 inn.)All of the poise and control exhibited by Ascher in the first game was also present in the arm of Plattsburgh State starter JD Jenkins who limited the Red Dragons to four hits and one unearned run in his complete-game triumph.
Control issues were present throughout the Oneonta State pitching staff right from the first frame. Frank Buksa came through with the first of nine Cardinal hits in the tilt when he mashed a 3-1 offering from Robert Marks to center field for a double.
Marks struggled mightily from then on as he issued three consecutive walks to produce the first Plattsburgh State score of the seven-inning game. Chris Pescetti received credit for the RBI by drawing the bases-loaded base on balls.
A third inning lengthened by a pair of Oneonta State miscues yielded another pair of Plattsburgh State runs. Luke Weaver reached on a sacrifice bunt attempt which was tossed into the outfield by Marks. The error allowed Pescetti to come around and score before Mat Chavez laid down a perfect bunt to pick up and RBI as Hieb scampered across the plate.
The Cardinals tacked on four additional runs in the fourth off of Oneonta reliever Nate Eastman. Rodriguez and Pescetti each made contact with the ball to pick up one RBI each and back-to-back wild pitches from Eastman plated the other two Cardinal scores.
Another four Plattsburgh State runs would cross the plate in the fifth. Pescetti was hit with a pitch while the bases were loaded before Hieb drew a bases-loaded walk to make matters 9-0. Weaver pushed the advantage to double-digits when his two-run double finished off the Cardinals' scoring.
Down to their final three outs, the Red Dragons broke up the shutout when Halligan reached on a fielder's choice which brought Orlando home.
Weaver finished 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Pescetti had a line of 1-for-1 with a trio of RBIs, three runs scored and a pair of walks. Lupo was the only other Cardinal to accumulate multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The two teams will close out their series on Sunday at noon. Currently, the game is scheduled to be played at the Red Dragon Baseball Field on the Oneonta State campus but may be moved to Oneonta High School once field conditions are assessed Sunday morning.
