Cardinals Erase Eight-Run Deficit, Win 12-11 as Part of Split at Oswego State

JD Jenkins went 1-1 during the Cardinals' split on Friday afternoon.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OSWEGO, N.Y. – A never-say-die attitude at the plate allowed the Plattsburgh State baseball team to come all the way back from an 8-0 disadvantage to take a 12-11 extra-inning decision over Oswego State as part of a 1-1 afternoon for the Cardinals at Laker Baseball Field on Friday afternoon.

After the offensive showcase, the teams settled into a pitcher's duel in game two. Once again, the game went to extras but it was the Lakers who wound up eking out a 1-0 triumph.

The Cardinals see their record move to 11-21 and 6-11 in SUNYAC confrontations while the Lakers go to 19-9 and 10-7 in league tilts.

GAME ONE: Plattsburgh State 12, Oswego State 11 (10 inn.)
It was a classic case of better late than never as the Plattsburgh State bats roared to life to produce all 12 runs in the final four innings of the series opener.

Cardinals' senior pitching ace Joe Leddy lasted just three innings as the Goshen N.Y., product gave up six hits and six runs to the Lakers, staking them to an early 6-0 lead.

Oswego State's edge ballooned to as much as 8-0 when a throwing error by Frank Buksa produced a run and an RBI single by Tim Smith accounted for another sixth-inning score by the home team.

Miles Kelly was the primary reason for the offensive woes of the Cardinals. The sophomore right-hander was mowing down the Plattsburgh State lineup, registering six strikeouts while allowing just one hit through six innings of work.

Finally, in the seventh inning, Plattsburgh State began to produce some hits off of Kelly. Nick Lupo and Chris Pescetti began the frame by mashing a single and a double respectively before RBIs from Yuya Osawa and Jeremy Rodriguez put the first two Cardinal runs of the tilt on the board.

Senior John Casten drove an RBI single up the middle and a pair of Oswego State errors allowed another pair of Plattsburgh State runs to cross home plate in the Cardinals' five-run seventh.

Tyler Baker was able to stem the Plattsburgh State tied by coming up with a sacrifice fly in the home half of the seventh to put the score at 9-5, but the Cardinals continued their offensive onslaught in the eighth.

With Kelly out of the game, the visiting squad strung together five two-out hits in the eighth which produced four runs to knot matters at nine. Luke Weaver started things off with a two-run triple down the right field line before Billy Rombauts notched an extra-base hit to plate Weaver. Junior Mike Vargues came up with the game-tying single, scoring Rombauts from second.

Keeping the Lakers' bats at bay was freshman Luis Pepen Matos who fired two relief innings of one-hit ball while registering a pair of punch-outs.

Rodriguez handed the Cardinals their first lead thanks to his two-out RBI single in the ninth, but the Lakers forced extra innings on the strength of a two-out RBI single by Michael Mascari in the bottom of the ninth.

Josh Martin began the tenth by hitting both Vargues and Buksa. Once again, the Cardinals pieced together some great two-out hitting to take the lead for good. Chris Pescetti looped a single into left field to score Vargues before Buksa scored the game-winning run on a passed ball.

Oswego State got one run back due to an RBI fielder's choice by John Rauseo, but JD Jenkins closed the door to preserve the win.

Seven different Cardinals registered at least one RBI during the back-and-forth affair. Rodrieugez and Weaver led the charge offensively as each one amassed three hits and two RBIs. Jenkins tossed two innings of relief to improve to 3-4 while Martin (3-1) took the loss for the Lakers.

GAME TWO: Oswego State 1, Plattsburgh State 0 (9 inn.)
As much as offense was the driving force of game one, pitching was just as dominant in the second game of the SUNYAC twinbill. With Jenkins (3-5) and Oswego State starter Tim Cronin matching wits on the hill, neither lineup could muster up much power. Plattsburgh State struck for six hits while the Lakers collected three – all of which came in the eighth and ninth innings.

Only two run-scoring opportunities presented themselves for Plattsburgh State in the final game of the day. Buksa began the top of the fourth with a single up the middle and eventually managed to reach third base on a groundout and a passed ball.

Osawa took a base on balls, placing runners at the corners with a pair of outs, before Rodriguez bounced into a fielder's choice to put the wraps on the inning.

Buksa added his second hit of the tilt in the sixth by chopping a one-out single through the left side of the infield. After Lupo drew a walk, the pair moved to second and third on a groundout by Pescetti. The Cardinals, though, were unable to conjure up a two-out hit and left their two runners stranded in scoring position.

Meanwhile, the Lakers were having no luck in solving Jenkins. The Lake George, N.Y., product worked out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth by inducing a pop-out to keep his no-hit bid intact.

Jenkins allowed the first Oswego State hit of the bout when Tim Curry led off the home half of the eighth with a single through the left side.

Just one inning later, the Lakers were able to squeeze across the winning run. Dan Saccocio was hit by a Jenkins offering to begin the bottom of the ninth and went on to swipe second base before moving to third on a bunt single.

After fanning his fifth Oswego State batter of the game, Jenkins intentionally walked Smith to load the bases and make the double-play ball an option. Unfortunately, a tenth inning wasn't meant to be as Kyle Liner drove a walk-off RBI single through the right side to plate the game-winning run.

Cronin kept his 2014 record untarnished, moving to 5-0 with the complete-game victory. Jenkins was denied a 2-0 day in the setback.

Both squads will put the finishing touches on their 2014 SUNYAC schedules when they conclude the three-game series with a single nine-inning game on Saturday at noon.
