Box Score 2 LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State head baseball coach Kris Doorey amassed the 300
th win of his career when the Cardinals split a SUNYAC doubleheader by outscoring Brockport 6-0 in game two at Siena College on Saturday afternoon.
By taking one out of three against the Golden Eagles in the three-game series, the Cardinals improved to 9-16 and 4-7 in SUNYAC bouts. Brockport moves to 13-10 and 5-7 in league play.
GAME ONE – Brockport 4, Plattsburgh State 3 (7 inn.)Getting the big hit at the right time proved to be a big problem for the Cardinals in their one-run loss to the Golden Eagles to begin play on Saturday.
The Cardinals stranded 11 runners on the base paths and saw one potential run thrown out at home in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Through the first trio of innings, Plattsburgh State starter Will Flynn matched zeroes with Golden Eagles' hurler Zack Lander. The only trouble Flynn encountered came in the visiting portion of the fourth inning.
Back-to-back hits by Wesley Burghardt and Dan Hurlimann led off the frame before Brockport put the first run on the board by way of a Plattsburgh State error. Burghardt covered the 90 feet from third base to home when Yuya Osawa misplayed a ground ball.
Some good hitting by the bottom of the Brockport order plated another trio of runs before all was said and done in the frame. Brendan Swayne sent a single through the left side of the Plattsburgh State infield to score two before Anthony Barbetto sent a 1-2 offering from Flynn to right-center field to score the final Brockport run of the day.
Plattsburgh State cut the Brockport lead in half in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Pescetti struck for an RBI single off of Golden Eagles' reliever Dakota Stackhouse (1-0). Billy Rombauts plated a run with a fielder's choice to make it a 4-2 game before Stackhouse induced a lineout to escape from the frame.
Frank Buksa added a two-out RBI in the bottom of the sixth to pull the Cardinals within one, but that was as close as Plattsburgh State could come.
Flynn took the loss and dropped to 1-4 in 2014. The junior pitched a complete game and gave up four runs on six hits and a base on balls. Flynn struck out three Brockport batters and was charged with just one earned run.
Osawa finished with a game-high three hits for Plattsburgh State while Pescetti added two of the Cardinals' eight base knocks.
GAME TWO – Plattsburgh State 6, Brockport 0 (9 inn.)Joe Leddy threw a complete game and the Cardinals' hitters mashed a total of 13 hits – including three of the extra-base variety – to secure a conference split with the Golden Eagles.
"We got sparked by a couple of guys who haven't had the opportunity to play as of late," said Doorey. "They took advantage of their opportunities and Brockport didn't get any of the hits they were getting."
Leddy improved to 3-0 by giving up only five hits to the Golden Eagles. The Goshen, N.Y., product struck out four and walked three during his fine outing.
"During the first eight innings, Leddy allowed the leadoff man to reach, but he battled back each time and really helped us out," Doorey added.
The Cardinals tagged hard-throwing Brockport righty Justin McCarthy (1-4) for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Osawa and Pescetti smashed back-to-back one-out RBI singles to left field during the Cardinals' first set of at-bats to take the lead for good.
That score held until the bottom of the third when Osawa placed a 2-1 pitch from McCarthy into left field, plating Nick Lupo and upping the Cardinals' edge to 3-0.
The only extra-base hit that also scored a run came off the bat of senior catcher John Casten in the bottom of the fourth. Ben Weightman drilled a two-out triple to deep right field before Casten plated the sophomore with an RBI two-bagger to left field.
Latulipe crossed home plate in the home half of the fifth as Yuya Osawa was caught in a rundown and Latulipe closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly that pushed Lupo across in the bottom of the seventh.
Plattsburgh State received contributions up and down its lineup as Latulipe and Osawa each collected a trio of hits. Lupo and Pescetti added two hits apiece to the Cardinals' total while Buksa, Casten and Weightman accumulated one hit each.
On Sunday afternoon, the Cardinals will wrap up their three-game SUNYAC series with No. 4-nationally ranked SUNY Cortland at 2 p.m. The game will be played at Siena Field.
