Errors Hurt Cardinals who Drop Two at Farmingdale State

Will Flynn threw six innings of three-hit baseball for the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Some costly mistakes in the field by the Plattsburgh State baseball team and a well-timed piece of hitting by Farmingdale State translated to two setbacks for the Cardinals (0-4) during their doubleheader with the Rams (4-1) on Sunday afternoon.

GAME ONE: Farmingdale State 12, Plattsburgh State 3
A difficult day in the field for Plattsburgh State yielded seven unearned runs for the Rams in the Cardinals' first Sunday tilt of the 2014 campaign.

Six errors were committed by the Cardinals in their seven-inning bout with the Rams with three of them coming in a three-run third inning for the home squad.

Sophomore starting pitcher Scott Orr recorded a pair of punch-outs in the frame, but a costly miscue by shortstop Brian Latulipe allowed a trio of Farmingdale baserunners to touch home plate.

The Rams tacked another score during the home portion of the fourth when Richard Sullivan laced an RBI single to right center. That hit was he first RBI in the game for Farmingdale who had collected four hits up to that point.

Plattsburgh State set out on the comeback trail in the top of the fifth when rookie designated hitter Jeremy Rodriguez reached first on the Rams' sole fielding miscue to lead off the inning. After hustling to second base on a passed ball, Rodriguez wound up at third after a sacrifice bunt by Luke Weaver.

Houppert plated his freshman teammate with an RBI single, making matters 4-1 and setting the stage for more Plattsburgh State offense during the Cardinals' next set of plate appearances.

Nick Lupo began the top of the sixth with a sharp single up the middle before Frank Buksa picked up his third RBI of the season by smashing a double to left field. Jon Repetto brought Buksa home with a sacrifice fly which trimmed the Cardinals' deficit to 4-3.

The Rams, though, put the kibosh on the Plattsburgh State comeback bid by batting around the order in an eight-run sixth. The biggest hit of the inning came off the bat of Anthony Alvino who blasted a bases-clearing triple which made matters 9-3.

Lupo and Rodriguez were responsible for five of the Cardinals' eight hits during the first game. Lupo went 3-for-4 at the dish while Rodriguez was 2-for-3. Both of them also registered a run scored.

Although he limited the Rams to only five hits, Orr (0-1) was hit with the setback after working through 5.1 innings and surrendering seven runs. Only three of them, though, were earned.

GAME TWO: Farmingdale State 2, Plattsburgh State 0
The second game of the double-dip was highlighted by the two dueling starters on the mound. Plattsburgh State's Will Flynn matched zeroes on the scoreboard with Farmingdale's Matt Seelinger up until the home half of the fifth inning.

After getting the first two outs of the frame, Flynn found himself facing off against Tom Rydzewski with Ram runners on second and third. The Farmingdale batter got the better of the Peru, N.Y., product by coming up with a two-run triple that proved to be the game-clinching knock.

Solving Seelinger was a tough thing to do for the Cardinals, who didn't register a hit against the Farmingdale starter in his five innings of work. Plattsburgh State only put four men on base through the first five innings.

The best chance to put runs on the board for the Cardinals came in the top of the sixth when Lupo led off with a single through the right side of the infield. The momentum, however, was short-lived when Buksa went down swinging and Lupo was gunned down at second base attempting to advance. Two more Plattsburgh State batters would reach the base paths, but Repetto flied out to end the frame.

Flynn (0-1) was hit with the loss after working his way through six innings and giving up just three hits. The junior struck out five and walked three batters. Seelinger moved to 1-0 by throwing five innings before Alex Pangourelias came in for a two-inning save.

Rodriguez was the only other Cardinal to come up with a hit in game two.

On Saturday, the Cardinals will migrate south to participate in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. While there, Plattsburgh State will take part in 14 games over the course of nine days with their first Florida action coming against the University of Massachusetts-Boston on Saturday at 1 p.m.
