Box Score 2 PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team was unable to emerge on the winning side of the scoreboard in their season opener on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals dropped a pair of games at St. Joseph's (Long Island).
GAME ONE – St. Joseph's 10, Plattsburgh State 6
Plattsburgh State staked senior hurler Kyle Kelly to an early 5-0 lead after batting around in their first ups of the 2014 campaign. The Cardinals made life difficult for Golden Eagles' starter Jonathan Beekman right away as Luke Weaver and Nick Lupo each got on base before swiping one bag each.
The second base on balls of the frame was issued to Brian Latulipe, which set the stage for junior Frank Buksa's two RBI double. Chris Pescetti made it a 3-0 Plattsburgh State lead by poking an RBI single into the field.
Another two-bagger – this one off the bat of Jon Repetto – pushed the lead to 4-0 before John Casten's sacrifice fly to score Pescetti closed out the Cardinals' first-inning barrage.
St. Joseph's got one back in the bottom of the frame when Kelly gave up an RBI double, but things really began to take a turn for the worse in the home half of the second inning.
Kelly saw his lead shrink to 5-3 after a pair of doubles and a single before Mike Vargues came in for the senior to try and cool off the Golden Eagles' bats. Instead, the home team plated another trio of runs with a bases-loaded single and another hit of the infield variety to put the Cardinals down 6-5.
Four insurance runs were tacked on by the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the sixth, and another sacrifice fly from Casten in the top half of the seventh scored the final Plattsburgh State run of the tilt.
Buksa and Casten each finished with a pair of RBI while Pescetti went 2-for-4 at the plate. Kelly took the loss, giving up five runs in 1.1 innings of work.
GAME TWO – St. Joseph's 1, Plattsburgh State 0
The second tilt of the afternoon turned into a pitcher's duel rather quickly, with JD Jenkins starring on the hill for the Cardinals.
The junior fanned seven St. Joseph's batters in 6.2 innings of work, but earned the tough-luck loss by hitting a Golden Eagles' batter with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Plattsburgh State's offense churned out just three hits during the second matchup, but thanks to the effort of Jenkins, St. Joseph's didn't fare much better as they mustered just six hits.
Plattsburgh State will remain on the road in search of their first victory of 2014 when they engage in another doubleheader on Sunday against Farmingdale State. The games are scheduled to begin at noon.
