GAME ONE – Johns Hopkins 14, Plattsburgh State 5 (9 inn.)
Johns Hopkins jumped on the Cardinals' Ben Weightman – who received his first starting assignment of the 2014 campaign – during their first set of plate appearances. A leadoff walk followed by a single set the table for Colin McCarthy who laced a two-run double to the gap in right center field.
The Blue Jays would go on to plate another pair of runners in the top of the first before the Cardinals responded with a big innings of their own. After posting a pair of quick outs, Plattsburgh State extended their first set of at-bats thanks to a pair of throwing errors by the Blue Jays.
With the bases loaded, Nick Lupo beat out an infield single to pick up his only RBI of the contest. Jeremy Rodriguez – who was one of the Cardinals who reached due to the Blue Jays' errors – came around to score on the play.
Plattsburgh State trimmed their deficit to just one by way of another Johns Hopkins fielding blunder. Chris Pescetti glided into first base safely after an error by the Blue Jays' shortstop allowed Yuya Osawa and Frank Buksa to cross home plate.
Things got out of hand for the Cardinals in the top of the second, though, as he Blue Jays struck for seven runs on six hits and a pair of Plattsburgh State errors. Richie Carbone produced the biggest offensive play of the inning when his sharp double down the left field line brought a trio of Blue Jays around to score.
Two more runs were tacked on by Johns Hopkins in the top of the third when the designated visiting club used an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to make matters 13-3. Making his second relief outing of the season was Shunsuke Sugimoto who worked the final seven innings of the game. The native of Tokyo, Japan, surrendered three runs on three hits and three walks while fanning a trio of batters.
The fourth error of the day committed by Johns Hopkins allowed Luke Weaver to score in the bottom of the fourth, trimming the Plattsburgh State deficit to 13-4. That disadvantage, though, worked its way back up to 10 when the Blue Jays added their final run of the game in the sixth on a fielder's choice.
It looked as though the Cardinals had a big inning up their sleeves when Joe Tolosky earned his first Plattsburgh State RBI on a one-out, bases-loaded walk, but Buksa bounced into a double play to end the threat.
Weightman (1-1) was issued the setback while Colin Friedman improved to 2-0 by going four innings. Weaver (2-for-5) and Lupo (2-for-4) combined for four of the Cardinals' seven hits in the non-conference duel.
GAME TWO – Plattsburgh State 4, Knox College 1 (9 inn.)
A three-run first inning by the Cardinals generated more than enough offense for Leddy to work with. Luke Weaver drew a walk to begin the game and advanced to second on a wild offering from the Prairie Fire's Alec Jordan.
Brian Latulipe sent a well-hit single down the right field line to plate Weaver before Yuya Osawa followed up with a single of his own. The second Plattsburgh State score came on the first of four Knox errors when Latulipe crossed the dish as Lupo was getting in to first safely thanks to the miscue of the Knox shortstop.
Chris Pescetti made it 3-0 when the junior recorded an RBI groundout to plate Osawa.
Houppert closed out the scoring for the Cardinals in the bottom of the third when his RBI groundout sent Lupo home.
Knox received their only score of the game in the fourth when Jackson White secured an RBI on a fielder's choice. The Prairie Fire produced their first hit of the game during the inning on a double by Ryan Weitendorf.
In his final five innings of work, Leddy was almost unstoppable as he gave up one walk and just one more hit to the Prairie Fire.
The line for the senior read nine innings pitched, two hits, one walk and a trio of strikeouts. Knox's lone run of the afternoon was unearned. Through a team-high 21 innings pitched, Leddy has given up just six runs.
Sunday will mark the Cardinals' final day in Florida and Plattsburgh State will wrap up their schedule of Sunshine State tilts with one final meeting with Knox. The nine-inning clash is scheduled for noon.
