Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. - All of the offense came in the latter part of the day for the Plattsburgh State baseball team as the Cardinals (2-5) split a twinbill with Plymouth State (4-2) on Sunday afternoon as part of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
GAME ONE – Plymouth State 6, Plattsburgh State 0
Only three Cardinal players made it on base in the first game of the non-conference doubleheader because of a sharp effort by Plymouth State senior hurler Tucker Regan.
The Panthers plated the game-winning runs with a two-out double by Mike Laflamme in the bottom of the second inning. Both of the runners who scored reached the base paths after being hit by offerings from Plattsburgh State starter Scott Orr.
Orr surrendered another two-run double in the home portion of the fourth when Austin Karls laced a pitch to left field. Four of the seven hits amassed by the Panthers came in the fourth, and the lead grew to 5-0 after Brandon Cox reached base safely due to an error by Cardinal catcher Frank Buksa. Karls crossed home plate as a result of the miscue.
Karls picked up his third RBI of the afternoon when his single in the fifth brought Jarek Krajewski around to score the final run of the tilt.
Nick Lupo broke up the no-hit bid by Regan in the top of the fourth when the sophomore reached on an infield hit. Buksa produced the only other Plattsburgh State hit of the clash with a single to center field in the top of the fifth.
Regan worked all seven innings and struck out six batters while giving up just one base on balls. Orr (0-2) was the pitcher of record for the Cardinals as he went 3.1 innings and gave up five runs.
Krajewski scored three of the six Plymouth State runs while the eight and nine hitters for the Panthers went 3-for-5 and racked up five RBI.
GAME TWO – Plattsburgh State 8, Plymouth State 5
After seeing their bats go cold in the first game, the Cardinals mashed nine hits and used a pair of four-run innings to earn the split with the Panthers.
Once again, it was the Panthers who opened the scoring with a two-run second. After Rob Madonna reached first base on the first of two Plattsburgh State errors in the inning, Krajewski blasted a triple to right-center to make matters 1-0. Krajewski was able to scamper home when Latulipe misplayed a ball in the infield from Dave Hall.
The Cardinals got under the skin of Plymouth State starting pitcher Cody Gilchrist by way of some two-out hitting in the bottom of the third. John Casten began the four-run frame with a single before Latulipe plated him with the second of five hits in the inning.
Lupo knotted the score at two with an RBI double that scored Latulipe before Yuya Osawa and Buksa picked up an RBI each to make it 4-2.
Another quartet of Plattsburgh State runs were tacked on in the fourth. Jeremy Rodriguez made it a three-run game with his RBI single before Latulipe delivered a two RBI triple which plated the eventual game-winning runs. Lupo picked up his second RBI of the tilt when his sacrifice hit scored Latulipe to make the score 8-2.
The Panthers tacked on three more runs off of Plattsburgh State relief pitcher Kyle Kelly in the bottom of the seventh to close within three, but Luis Pepen Matos took over and stopped the Plymouth State comeback attempt with a pair of fly ball outs en route to his first save as a collegian.
Flynn (1-1) earned the win by working through four innings in which he gave up four hits, four walks and two runs. Glichrist was hit with the loss as he lasted 3.1 innings while giving up six hits and six runs – all of which were earned.
Latulipe finished 2-for-3 with a trio of RBI and two runs scored. The one through four hitters in Plattsburgh State's lineup finished 5-for-10 and combined to produce seven RBI.
A full Monday is up next for the Cardinals who will play a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Stout at 10 a.m., before facing off against McDaniel in a single game at 4 p.m.
