PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Shannon Stewart contributed five points as the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team defeated Potsdam, 10-0, on a night in which the Cardinals honored the 2013-14 senior class at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Cardinals scored five in the first and five more in the second to earn the win in dominating fashion. Freshman Jordan Lipson got the offense going, poking home her own rebound at the 7:14 mark of the first.
A little over three minutes later, Shannon Stewart's feed from the corner found Bridget Balisy in the slot and Balisy went bar down to give Plattsburgh State an early 2-0 lead.
Plattsburgh State kept pouring it on as Lipson picked up her second of the night at the 12:18 mark and Mel Ames followed with her fifth of the year at 15:25. Rookie forward Katelyn Turk closed out the period, scoring with 0.5 seconds left in the first to give the Cardinals a commanding 5-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.
Turk opened the second period with her second of the game at the 3:35 mark, before Giovanna Senese netted the next two. Chelsea VanGlahn's breakaway was denied but Senese punched in the rebound to make it 7-0 at 5:50. Senese followed with a power-play goal at 11:32, knocking the puck over the goal line after Alyssa Parke's shot from the left point tipped the glove of the Potsdam's Abby Tardelli.
The Cardinals added two more in late in the period to reach the 10-0 final. Ames picked up her second of the night at 16:50 and Shannon Stewart added her team-leading 14
th of the year just 38 seconds later.
Stewart finished the night with a goal and four assists. Turk had two goals and an assist while Tyne Gove chipped in three helpers. Ames, Senese, Parke, Lipson and Mia Favretto each tallied two points.
Plattsburgh State outshot Potsdam, 44-7, including a 23-3 margin in the first period. The Cardinals went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Bears were 0-for-1.
Sydney Aveson needed just seven saves to improve to 13-0-1 and earn her 11
th shutout of the season, which matches the Cardinals' single-season record. Tardelli suffered the loss for the Bears, making 29 stops through the first two periods. Alexane Rodrigue stepped in for Potsdam in the third, stopping all five shots she faced.
The win, which marked Plattsburgh State Head Coach Kevin Houle's 250
th victory, moves the Cardinals to 17-0-1 overall and 10-0-0 against ECAC West opponents. The Bears drop to 9-7-3 on the year and 5-4-3 in conference play.
Prior to the start of Saturday's game, Plattsburgh State also honored its six seniors – Jenny Kistner, Allison Era, Chelsea VanGlahn, Jordan Caldwell, Sydney Aveson and Ali Vakos.
The Cardinals hit the road next weekend for a pair of pivotal ECAC West games at Elmira. The top two teams in the league, who are both unbeaten in conference play, will meet Friday night at 7 p.m. before closing out the weekend series on Saturday at 3 p.m.
