Cardinals and Knights Set for Round Two in 2014 SUNYAC Semifinals

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team will head back to Geneseo for a second time this season as the two teams will meet in the SUNYAC Semifinals, Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The Cardinals are coming off what is technically a 0-0 tie at Oneonta on Saturday but won 4-2 in a shootout over the Red Dragons in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals to advance to the Semifinals.

In the matchup earlier this year against Geneseo, the Knights won the contest 1-0 at home over the Cardinals less than two weeks ago.

Meaghan Johnston scored the only goal of the game in the ninth minute for the Knights as the rest of the 81 minutes saw a scoreless struggle between the two teams.

Geneseo owned a 7-1 shots on goal advantage in the first matchup as Cardinal goalkeeper Danielle Schmitt made six saves in the losing effort.

Both teams rank top three offensively and defensively in the SUNYAC as the Cardinals are first in goals per game (2.22) and second in goals allowed per game (0.78) while Geneseo ranks third in goals per game (1.89) and first overall in goals allowed per game (0.50).

Geneseo won the SUNYAC regular season, posting a 7-1-1 record claiming the top seed overall and a first round bye in the SUNYAC tournament. Meanwhile the Cardinals were able to defeat Oneonta, another team that they lost a one goal game to on the road earlier in the regular season.

The winner of No. 5 Plattsburgh and No. 1 Geneseo will face the winner of No. 6 Buffalo State at No. 2 Cortland on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the SUNYAC Finals with an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament on the line. Host location for Saturday's match will go to the highest remaining seed out of the four.
