ONEONTA, N.Y. – Taking part in their final set of matches in 2014, the Plattsburgh State volleyball team's time at the Oneonta State Dig Pink Invitational didn't start off very strongly as the Cardinals (5-19) found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-13) decision against Ithaca College on Friday night.
Try as they might, the Cardinals found themselves unable to get things rolling against the Bombers early on. In the opening frame, Plattsburgh State totaled a quartet of terminations on 30 swings. Six attack errors in the frame led to a hitting percentage of -.066.
Armed with the goal of avoiding a 2-0 deficit in the match, the Cardinals came out in much stronger fashion in the middle set. A more effective attack plan led to a .125 attack percentage which featured nine kills on 32 attempts.
Unfortunately, Ithaca was able to clamp down in the waning minutes of the match and take a 2-0 lead via a 25-21 tally.
Even though the Cardinals found a relative abundance of openings for offensive opportunities in the second frame, the Bombers used the three minutes between sets to shore up its defense.
Plattsburgh State hit .000 in the deciding frame which saw the Bombers take a lopsided 25-13 decision to earn the victory.
Four different Plattsburgh State players – Emily Miller, Noelle Miller, Amanda Robinson and Maggie Schrantz – totaled a team-best four kills during the non-conference match. Senior setter Meghan Clifford passed out 16 of the Cardinals' 17 assists while freshman Jordynne Ales added three of Plattsburgh State's four service aces.
Emily Miller was also a force at the front of the net for the Cardinals, totaling a solo block as well as an impressive five block assists. Schrantz hustled down a team-best eight digs in the losing effort.
Saturday will mark the final day of the Cardinals' 2014 campaign. Plattsburgh State will put the wraps on their latest season by facing off against Bard at noon and Hartwick at 2 p.m. at the Dig Pink Invitational.
