ONEONTA, N.Y. – On the final day of their 2014 season, the Plattsburgh State volleyball team was able to earn a split by defeating Bard College 3-0 at the Oneonta State Dig Pink Invitational.
MATCH ONE: Plattsburgh State 3, Bard 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-9)The Raptors didn't pose too much of a problem for the Cardinals in their first match of the day. Efficiency was the name of the game for Plattsburgh State, who hit .247 in the three-set sweep. Maggie Schrantz led the way with a match-high 11 kills on 26 swings. The Buffalo, N.Y., product made just three hitting errors, leaving her with a hitting percentage of .308 for the match.
Noelle Miller and Emily Miller totaled seven and six terminations respectively while freshman Miranda Sheffer added five more to go along with a match-high 19 digs. Senior Meghan Clifford racked up 27 of the Cardinals' 32 assists in the win.
Plattsburgh State totaled 13 service aces during the one-sided affair, with Schrantz, Sheffer and Jordynne Ales tallying three apiece.
Philippine Alba hammered down a team-high five kills for Bard who hit .000 in the match.
MATCH TWO: Hartwick 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (26-24, 25-20, 22-25, 25-17)In their 2014 finale, the Cardinals hung tough with Hartwick before ultimately falling by a 3-1 score. Set one required extra points, but the Hawks used a .171 hitting percentage to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals hit -.019 in the opening frame.
Plattsburgh State fell into a 2-0 hole after Hartwick took the second frame, but cut the deficit in half with a 25-22 win in the third set.
Both teams saw the offense ramp up a bit in the deciding frame as the Cardinals hit .250 and the Hawks .286.
Schrantz finished with a match-high 13 kills for the Cardinals in the setback. She also had an assist, a service ace and seven digs in her final collegiate match. Clifford added a 41-assist, 14-dig double-double in the last match of her career.
Noelle Miller chipped in 11 kills for the Cardinals while Ales contributed a match-high 20 digs and two of Plattsburgh State's seven service aces.
The Cardinals wrap up the season with a record of 6-20.
