ONEONTA, N.Y. - So far this season, opposing SUNYAC squads have put their power on display when facing off against the Plattsburgh State baseball team, and unfortunately that trend continued on Saturday in the first of three games against Oneonta State.

The Red Dragons bashed a pair of home runs and the Cardinals racked up just four hits in a 4-2 setback that lowered Plattsburgh State's 2013 mark to 5-13 and 1-6 in league confrontations. Oneonta State improves to 7-12 and 2-0 in league bouts.

Brian Latulipe gave the Cardinals their only lead of the nine-inning game when the sophomore laced a double to right center field that scored Luke Weaver in the top of the first inning.

Chris Massaroni needed just one swing of the bat, however, to put the Cardinals behind for the rest of the game. The catcher took Kyle Kelly deep in the bottom of the first with a two-run shot which was one of 11 hits for the Red Dragons on the day.

One of the two Plattsburgh State errors proved costly as Chris Orlando padded the advantage for the home squad with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second. Ivan Plata crossed home plate after Shane Hoppert's error at third base allowed the shortstop to reach.

Mat Chavez helped the Cardinals slice into the Oneonta State lead in the top of the third. After JD Springer drew a lead-off base on balls, Chavez brought him home with an RBI groundout that made matters 3-2.

The Cardinals, though, just couldn't produce enough offense against Oneonta State starter Steve Ascher who worked the entirety of the game. Ascher fanned seven Plattsburgh State batters and issued just two walks.

Thomas Hand provided the final run of the game, taking Mike Doughtie out of the park with his first long ball of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Kelly (0-4) was the tough-luck loser, working just two innings and giving up the first three runs. Doughtie worked six innings and struck out three in a great relief effort. The two hurlers combined for just one walk during the game.

Casey Brighton and Nick Lupo went 1-for-4 for Plattsburgh State.

The Cardinals and Red Dragons will play two more SUNYAC games on Sunday with the first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for noon.
