NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - Offense was in short supply for the Plattsburgh State baseball team as the Cardinals were only able to push two runs across home plate in a pair of losses to New Paltz on Saturday afternoon at Loren Campbell Memorial Field.

The Cardinals dropped game one 7-0 before falling 3-2 to the Hawks in the second bout. Plattsburgh State slides to 9-20 and 4-11 in league play while New Paltz moves above .500 to 15-14 and 11-6 in SUNYAC play.

GAME ONE: New Paltz 7, Plattsburgh State 0 (7 inn.)
Senior Brian Burns' quest for a SUNYAC-best fifth win of the season was put on hold thanks to a big third inning by the Hawks.

After recording the first out of the frame on his first offering, the Ellenville, N.Y., product hit his second of four New Paltz batters before the Hawks strung together four consecutive hits to blow the game open.

Matt Prescia and David Lostaglio gave the home team a 2-0 lead with RBI singles before Matt Kaldon drilled an RBI double to left-center to make it a 3-0 game.

A wild pitch from Burns brought home another New Paltz run and the Hawks plated another with a sacrifice fly before Burns got himself out of the inning.

It was near-impossible for the Cardinals to give Burns the slightest bit of run support thanks to a dominant outing by Andrew Grann. The junior pitched the entire game and surrendered just three hits while striking out six and walking three.

Repetto picked up another pair of RBIs with a single down the left field line in the sixth to conclude the scoring.

The Cardinals were nearly able to push a run across in the fifth, but Mat Chavez was thrown out at home for the final out of the frame.

Burns falls to 4-2 on the season after a five-inning day of work in which he gave up nine hits and all seven runs.

GAME TWO: New Paltz 3, Plattsburgh State 2 (9 inn.)
Corey Grossman (2-4) endured his fourth loss of the season despite throwing a fine game in the season finale against the Hawks.

Locked in yet another pitcher's duel, New Paltz struck first when Kaldon smashed an RBI double to left-center field that scored Lostaglio in the home half of the second.

Plattsburgh State took its first lead of the three-game SUNYAC series in the top of the fifth inning where the Cardinals amassed four of their eight hits. Ben Weightman got things going with a one-out double that sent Nick Lupo to third base.

Kevin Briggs knotted matters at one with an RBI single that plated Lupo before a pivotal play at the plate accounted for the second out of the frame.

Weightman was throw out at home trying to give the Cardinals the lead after the ball got away from the New Paltz backstop. Luke Weaver eventually gave Plattsburgh State the lead with a two-out RBI single through the right side of the infield that plated Briggs.

New Paltz, however, responded with the final two runs of the tilt in their half of the frame. After Grossman hit Richard Guido to lead off the frame, Matt Carr drove a double to left-center to tie things at two. On the heels of a sacrifice bunt that allowed Carr to advance to third, the Hawks came up with the winning run when Anthony Repetto hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

Chris Pyz picked up the win for the Hawks by firing seven innings, striking out three and walking a trio of Plattsburgh State batters. Briggs finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. Weaver went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk as well.

After a long slate of road contests, the Cardinals will return to Chip Cummings Field on Tuesday to face Skidmore in a non-conference contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
