WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Sophomore pitcher Corey Grossman put forth another superb effort on the mound, but the Plattsburgh State baseball team couldn't whip up enough production at the plate as it dropped a 3-0 decision to Fredonia State during their final game of the RussMatt Invitational on Saturday evening.
The Cardinals (3-9, 1-2 SUNYAC) amassed six hits, but committed three errors that translated to a pair of unearned scores for the Blue Devils (3-2, 2-1 SUNYAC).
As good as Grossman was on the hill, his counterpart Zachary Hugg was equally dominant for the Blue Devils. Hugg tossed a complete game, striking out four and allowing just one base on balls to earn the victory.
Fredonia State generated all of the offense it needed in the second frame when second baseman Connor Lorenzo capped off a trio of two-out hits with an RBI single that plated Ian Gallagher, making matters 1-0.
Unable to cobble together any consistent offense against Hugg, the Cardinals put just three runners on the base paths through the first five innings and never put a runner on second base until the bottom of the sixth.
“It's a shame that Corey has nothing to show for his work,” said Plattsburgh State head coach Kris Doorey. “He has thrown two gems and has two losses. Offensively, we get singles here and there but we don't have a good approach at the plate.”
Fredonia State designated hitter Kenny Johnston laced a double to right field to lead off the seventh before coming around to score an unearned run after an error by Grossman (0-2). The Blue Devils plated one final run in the top of the ninth to account for the final margin.
JD Springer went 2-for-4 to lead the Plattsburgh State charge while Luke Weaver, Brian Latulipe and Casey Brighton were 1-for-4 at the plate. Springer represented the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, but the freshman was gunned down on strike before Shunsuke Sugimoto suffered the same fate to conclude the game.
Grossman worked seven innings, giving up six hits and one earned run while striking out six Blue Devils. Mike Vargues worked the remainder of the game, sitting down a pair of Fredonia State batters via the strikeout.
With their Sunshine State schedule at an end, the Cardinals are scheduled to appear at Chip Cummings Field for the first time in 2013 on Tuesday when Lyndon State makes the trip to Plattsburgh. The non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
