Box Score OSWEGO, N.Y. – A 17-14 advantage in shots for the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team was not enough to help the Cardinals overcome a pair of first half goals by Oswego State as the visitors saw their two-game winning streak come to an end on Friday afternoon at the Laker Soccer Field.
As a result of their first SUNYAC setback of 2013, the Cardinals slip to 3-6-1 and 1-1 in league play. The home-standing Lakers improve to 7-3-0 and 2-1 in conference confrontations.
Coming off a five-point week, freshman striker Diana DiCocco helped the Cardinals set an offensive tone less than one minute into the match as she fired a shot at Oswego keeper Alyssa Glasshagel.
After the initial shot of the match by DiCocco, the Lakers went on the attack. Plattsburgh State keeper Kristy Kirkpatrick racked up three saves in the first 10:35 of the game before Oswego State struck for the first time.
Bailey Waterbury sent an outlet pass to Tia Segretto who netted her fifth goal of the season when her shot to the lower right corner beat Kirkpatrick to make the score 1-0 Oswego State 16:16 into the game.
Nicole Perincario added the Lakers' second goal of the afternoon at the 27:43 mark of the tilt. Bri Dolan assisted on the goal which was sent past Kirkpatrick's left side.
Time and time again, the Cardinals challenged Glasshagel (4-1), but the Oswego keeper came up with seven saves to keep her effort for a clean sheet intact.
Emily LaLone and Ashlie Guinness each fired a shot on the Lakers' net in the final five minutes of the first half.
During the second half, Plattsburgh State's offensive effort was hindered by four offside calls. DiCocco and senior Lauren Gonyea recorded the only two shots on goal for the Cardinals in the final 45 minutes.
Kirkpatrick (2-2) made seven saves for Plattsburgh State which was led offensively by DiCocco's five shots. LaLone and Gonyea each attempted three and each of the aforementioned offensive players put two shots on goal.
In addition to having the upper hand in total shots, the Cardinals doubled up the Lakers in corner kicks – taking two while limiting the home squad to one.
A rare morning match in Cortland, N.Y., is the next assignment on the Cardinals' 2013 agenda. Plattsburgh State will take on SUNYAC rival SUNY Cortland beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.
