Cardinals End Regular Season with Canton Sweep

CANTON, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team wrapped up the regular season Wednesday with two non-conference wins at SUNY Canton. The Cardinals took game one handily, 19-7, before earning a 4-2 win in extra-innings in the back end of the doubleheader.

Pat Shaughnessy led Plattsburgh in game one, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a stolen base, six RBIs and two runs scored. Shaughnessy's three-run home run in the seventh inning made him the Cardinals' all-time home-run leader with 11.

Mike Mulvihill went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and scored twice. Kris Cauchon, Damian Tyler and Pedro Gonzalez each added a pair of hits as the Cardinals combined for 19 hits.

Jared Marckese had three hits for Canton while Phil Tsiaras and Steven Cano picked up two hits apiece.

Casey Mohrien held the Roos to one run on four hits through six innings to earn the win for Plattsburgh. Nick Fortune, Matt Brown and Tyler Mesec each gave the Cardinals an inning of relief.

Josh Soffer took the loss for Canton, giving up 10 earned runs and 12 hits in six innings.

In game two, Canton took a 2-0 lead in game two on an RBI double by Jordan Hunneyman and a single to right field by Marckese.

The Cardinals (22-15) rallied for two runs in the eighth when Shaughnessy scored an unearned run and Jon Handy drove hom Jimmy Roasrio with a single to center field.

Mulvihill lifted Plattsburgh to the win in the 10th with a double to left field, allowing Cauchon to score. Greg Larnerd came around to score on a throwing error by the Canton third baseman to give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead.

Corey Grossman took a no-decision for Plattsburgh, giving up two runs on three hits in seven innings of work. Bobby Piser tossed three scoreless innings to close out the game and earn the win.

James Amelotte suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run through 9 1/3 innings. Travis Legacy came on in relief to record the last two Cardinal outs.

The Cardinals enter the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament on a five-game winning streak. Fourth-seeded Plattsburgh will face host SUNY Cortland Thursday at noon.
