OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team (18-15, 9-9 SUNYAC) scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning to earn a 13-10 come-from-behind win over Oswego State (15-19, 6-9) on Sunday. With the win, the Cardinals have secured a spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament.
The Cardinals took a 3-0 lead in the second, but the Lakers tied it up by the bottom of the fourth. Plattsburgh regained the lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI single by Mike Mulvihill and an RBI double by Casey Brighton to make it 5-3.
In the bottom half of the fifth, the Lakers scored a run on a sacrifice fly and an unearned run to tie it up again before taking an 8-5 lead in the sixth on an inside-the-park home run by John Rauseo. Rauseo went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored to lead Oswego.
Plattsburgh scored twice in the top of the seventh and then used a bloop double down the right field line by Pedro Gonzalez to start a six-run rally in the eighth.
Oswego scored twice in the ninth but the Cardinals, who committed six errors, were able to close it out to earn the victory
Mulvihill went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals with four RBIs. Pat Shaughnessy also had a big day at the plate for Plattsburgh, going 4-for-5 with an RBI, a walk, a stolen base and three runs scored. Brighton added four hits while Jon Handy drove in a pair of runs.
Tyler Greene took the mound for Plattsburgh and received the no-decision, allowing five earned runs and six hits. Greene walked two and struck out four in six innings of work. Brian Burns came on in relief and earned to win after giving up two runs on two hits through the final three innings.
The Cardinals tagged Oswego starter Dan Erne for seven runs and 11 hits through seven innings. Mark Schaper suffered the loss after allowing four runs and six hits in the last two frames.
Plattsburgh returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference game at Skidmore, scheduled for 4 p.m.
