PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – A balanced offensive effort helped lift the Plattsburgh State baseball team to a 12-6 win over St. Lawrence University in a non-conference game at Chip Cummings Field Wednesday.
The Saints scored two runs early on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Kott and an RBI single by Bryan Palermo but the Cardinals plated three runs in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 5-2 lead.
Plattsburgh (16-14) put up a five-spot in the fourth to take a comfortable 10-2 lead. Mike Mulvihill drove in a run before scoring later in the inning on an error. Brian Latulipe added an RBI single while Tommy Verdino brought home a pair of runs with a single to right field.
St. Lawrence (19-6) cut the deficit to 10-4 in the fifth inning when Paul Piatelli hit a two-run single to right field. The Saints added a run in the seventh and the eighth but were unable to overcome the Cardinals.
Mulvihill and Damian Tyler each went 3-for-5 with an RBI for Plattsburgh. Verdino and Latulipe picked up two RBIs apiece while five Cardinals each scored two runs. Plattsburgh finished the day with 18 hits.
St. Lawrence was led by Palermo who was 4-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Piatelli went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Carter Franz chipped in three hits. The Saints rapped out 17 hits but struggled to bring them home, leaving 14 runners on base.
It was a bullpen day for the Cardinals as they used eight different pitchers in Wednesday’s effort. Matt Brown earned his first win for Plattsburgh after tossing the second inning and allowing one run. Brian Burns, Steven Corea, Corey Grossman, Devin Stark, Tyler Mesec and Casey Mohrien each gave the Cardinals an inning of work. Marc Plante threw the final two innings for Plattsburgh, recording three strikeouts.
Michael Dell’Olio suffered the loss for the Saints after allowing three runs on four hits in two innings. St. Lawrence used Ben Jenkins, Andrew Weitzel, Kyle Donaldson and Piatelli in relief.
The Cardinals hit the road this weekend for a three games against Oswego State. The conference series opens Friday with a single game at 3 p.m. and is followed by a doubleheader Saturday set for noon.
