ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team took game one at Oneonta by a score of 6-4, but the Red Dragons handed the Cardinals a 5-1 loss in the back end of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader Tuesday.
Oneonta (14-14, 7-5 SUNYAC) plated an early run in the first game, but Plattsburgh (15-14, 7-8 SUNYAC) took the lead in the top of the third on a two-run home run to left field by Damian Tyler.
The Cardinals added three more runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Kris Cauchon and a two-run double by Pat Shaughnessy. Shaughnessy gave Plattsburgh an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single through the left side. He finished the day with two hits and three RBIs.
Tory Bouyea went 3-for 3 in the first game and drove in a pair of runs for Oneonta. Kevin Knack had an RBI and scored twice.
Kyle Kelly went 6 1/3 innings for Plattsburgh to earn the win. Kelly allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out two. Mike Doughtie recorded the final to outs for the Cardinals to record his first save of the season.
Steve Lambert suffered the loss after giving up six runs and seven hits through 6 1/3 innings for the Red Dragons.
Alex Mastrianni tossed a complete game for Oneonta in game two, holding Plattsburgh to just one run and five hits to move to 2-2 on the year.
Bouyea put the Red Dragons on the board in the first inning of the second game, scoring Knack on a groundout. Plattsburgh answered back in the second with a solo home run by Mike Mulvihill but was unable to score the rest of the way.
Oneonta added a run in the third and three more in the eighth to take the win.
Tyler Greene took the mound for Plattsburgh, allowing eight hits and three earned runs in 7 1/3 innings of work. Doughtie again came on in relief to record the final two outs.
Plattsburgh takes a break from its SUNYAC schedule tomorrow to host St. Lawrence for a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Chip Cummings Field.
