PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Two big innings in the second game of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader helped the Plattsburgh State baseball team defeat Brockport, 11-9, and finish the day with a doubleheader split. The Cardinals dropped game one, 10-4.
Brockport (17-10, 6-5 SUNYAC) capitalized on a Plattsburgh (14-13, 6-7 SUNYAC) error early in game one when Nick Bunce reached on an error by Brian Latulipe, allowing Corey Booth to score and give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Mike Weakley led off the Brockport half of the third inning with a solo home run over the left field fence before Booth scored again on a sacrifice fly as the Golden Eagles took a 3-1 lead.
Weakley doubled in a run in the fourth and scored on an RBI single by Bunce. Brockport took a 6-0 lead on a double down the left field line by Kyle Tracy, but Tracy was gunned down at third trying to stretch out the hit.
Plattsburgh finally got on the board in the fourth when Mike Mulvihill drove in two runs with a double to left field. Jon Handy singled to center to bring home Mulvihill and later scored on an RBI single by Latulipe, as the Cardinals cut the deficit to 6-4.
The Plattsburgh bullpen was unable to put up zeros as the Cardinals gave up two unearned runs in the fifth and surrendered two more runs in the sixth.
Aaron Tilley earned the win for Brockport, allowing four runs on five hits. John Lowe and David Campese gave the Golden Eagles three innings of scoreless relief.
Tyler Greene suffered the loss after giving up four earned runs and 10 hits.
The Cardinals found themselves in a 4-0 hole in the third inning of game two as Mulvihill stepped to the plate. Mulvihill cleared the bases with a double to right center and later scored on a single by Handy. Casey Brighton wrapped up the inning for Plattsburgh with an RBI single to right field, giving the Cardinals a 5-4 lead.
Brockport scored two runs in the fourth but Plattsburgh tied it up in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single by Mike Varques.
Five more runs in the seventh inning for Plattsburgh secured the win. Brighton drove in a run on a single to center before Varques tripled down the right field line. Damian Tyler drove in two more runs on a double to left.
Brockport threatened in the top of the eighth scoring two more runs, but the Cardinals were able to hang on for the win and stay a game above .500.
Bobby Piser got the no-decision for the Cardinals, allowing five earned runs and eight hits through the first 3 2/3 innings. Steven Corea earned the win while Marc Plante picked up his first save.
Mark Ciccotti took the mound for Brockport and gave up six runs on 10 hits in the no-decision. Rob Stankiewicz suffered the loss after allowing five runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Weakley had a big day at the plate with six hits, two RBIs and four runs scored. Jake Coleman and Brendan Swayne finished the day with three RBIs apiece.
Mulvihill drove in five runs and Brighton picked up four hits on the afternoon. Chris Pescetti and Handy each scored three runs in the doubleheader.
Plattsburgh continues conference play on Tuesday with a doubleheader at Oneonta.
