Boxscore and Play-by-Play

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sloppy play by the Plattsburgh State baseball team allowed Brockport to put up five runs in the second inning and defeat the Cardinals, 9-2, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday at Chip Cummings Field.

Brockport (16-9, 5-4 SUNYAC) jumped on Plattsburgh (13-12, 5-6 SUNYAC) early as Pete Wilson led off the game with a single to left center and came around to score on an RBI single to left field by Nick Bunce.

The Cardinals answered back with a run in the bottom half of the first. Kris Cauchon walked and Chris Pescetti reached on an error before Mike Mulvihill tied it up with a single to center field, allowing Cauchon to cross the plate.

But things got ugly for Plattsburgh in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles by the Golden Eagles put runners on first and second before Pat Shaughnessy was unable to field a throw by Plattsburgh catcher Casey Brighton, giving Stephen Boronczyk the green light to score the go-ahead run and move Brendan Swayne to third. An error by Brian Latulipe allowed Swayne to score before Brockport tacked on three more runs in the inning.

Brockport scored two more in the fifth on an RBI triple by Jake Coleman and an RBI double by Mike DeGregory.

Damian Tyler drove in Plattsburgh’s second run with a single to right field in the eighth.

Mulvihill and Jon Handy were the only Cardinals with multiple hits, each with two on the day.

Wilson, Coleman and Corey Booth all went 3-for-5 for the Golden Eagles. Booth and Bunch drove in two runs apiece.

Mike Doughtie got the start for Plattsburgh but only lasted 1 1/3 innings. Doughtie gave up five earned runs on seven hits in the loss. Kyle Kelly allowed two runs and five hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Steven Corea, Marc Plante, Corey Grossman and Tyler Mesec each worked in inning out of the Cardinal bullpen.

James Bardenett improved to 6-2 on the year for Brockport. Bardenett held Plattsburgh to one run on three hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work. Mark Driesel gave up a run in 1 2/3 innings while Rob Stankiewicz held the Cardinals scoreless through the final 1 1/3.

The same two teams will wrap up their SUNYAC series tomorrow with a doubleheader set for noon.
