CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team (13-9, 5-4 SUNYAC) won game one 2-0 before nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland (16-6-1, 4-2 SUNYAC) rolled to a 14-1 victory in game two in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday.

The Cardinals used a sound defensive display to take the first game of a doubleheader. All the scoring the Cardinals would need came in the fifth inning. After singles by both Brian Latulipe and Casey Brighton, Matt Meunier stepped up to single into right field and bring Latulipe home for the first score of the game. With Meunier on first base and Brighton waiting at third, Pat Shaughnessy sent a sacrifice-fly out to center field as Brighton scored.

Tyler Greene pitched seven scoreless innings for the Cardinals, giving up just six hits and striking out six batters. Mike Hughes took the mound for the Red Dragons, giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Game two was a different story for the Cardinals as the Red Dragons offense got going and did not stop.  The Cardinals used six different pitchers in an attempt to slow the Red Dragons down, all to no avail. Marc Plante was credited with the loss after giving up five hits and five earned runs in one inning.

Cortland got on the board early and often, scoring five runs in the first two innings off of Plante. After a scoreless third inning, the Red Dragons tacked another five runs on in the fourth. The Cardinals pulled one run back in the fifth inning when Casey Brighton ripped a single to bring Pedro Gonzalez home. Cortland responded with three runs of their own in the same inning and added one more in the eighth inning to round out the scoring.

Chris Pescetti led the Cardinals with three hits in game two. Kris Cauchon and Brian Latulipe each added two hits of their own.

The Cardinals are back in SUNYAC action on Tuesday April 3, when they host Oneonta State at Chip Cummings Field. Start time is set for 3 p.m.
