CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team (12-8, 4-3 SUNYAC) lost 11-0 on the road in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action to nationally-ranked SUNY Cortland (15-5-1, 3-1 SUNYAC) Friday.
Bobby Piser got the start for the Cardinals and allowed eight runs, six earned, in five innings. He gave up nine hits and one walk. Pedro Gonzalez went 1-for-2 with a walk at the plate for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals had a great opportunity to get on the board in the fourth inning. Kris Cauchon led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch and took third on a one-out groundout, but Red Dragon pitcher Aaron Schuldt struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Schuldt allowed three hits and two walks and struck out 14 batters in seven scoreless innings before Ryan McAlary took over.
Cortland got off to a fast start by scoring three runs in the first inning. Andrew Pezzuto knocked a RBI double, Max Rosing hit a RBI single and Chris Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to give them the advantage. The Red Dragons added a run in the fifth before putting the game out of reach in the sixth inning by adding six more runs. The final run came in the eighth inning when John Adornetto hit a triple and then scored on a wild pitch from the Cardinals.
The Cardinals will face Cortland again tomorrow in a double-header. The first game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
