PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Chris Pescetti drove in three runs as the Plattsburgh State baseball team picked up a 7-3 win over Norwich in a non-conference game Tuesday at Chip Cummings Field.
The Cardinals scored three runs in the bottom of the first to build an early cushion, but the Cadets responded with two runs in the top of the fifth to make it a one-run game.
In the bottom of the seventh, Pat Shaughnessy reached base on an error and Jon Handy was hit by a pitch, giving Plattsburgh (12-7) runners on first and second with two outs. Pescetti singled to right center to bring both runners home and give the Cardinals a 5-2 lead.
Dustin Shimkus doubled in the Norwich (1-13) half of the eighth, scoring Joe Sleeman and cutting the Plattsburgh lead to 5-3.
An RBI triple by Shaughnessy in the bottom of the eighth allowed Brian Latulipe to make it 6-3 in favor of the Cardinals. Damian Tyler followed with a single to left field that scored Shaughnessy, who led Plattsburgh with three runs scored.
Latulipe, Pescetti, Tyler and Gonzalez each finished the day with two hits. Sleeman went 3-for-4 for the Cadets.
Kyle Kelly went eight innings for Plattsburgh to earn the win. Kelly allowed an earned run on seven hits while walking three and registering three strikeouts. Steven Corea pitched a scoreless ninth.
Brad Hudson took the mound for Norwich, giving up three earned runs on seven hits through 6 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out three in the loss. Devin Cilley surrendered two runs in the final 1 1/3 innings.
Plattsburgh returns to conference play this weekend at Cortland for a three-game series. The series opens Friday at 3 p.m. with a nine-inning game and will be followed with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
