PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team split Saturday’s State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader against New Paltz to take the three-game series, 2-1.
Game One: New Paltz 5, Plattsburgh 0 (7 inn.)
The first six innings of the early game proved to be a pitcher’s duel between Plattsburgh’s Tyler Greene and New Paltz’s Andrew Grann.
Greene held the Hawks to four hits until things started to unravel in the top of the seventh. Singles by Matt Prescia and Jake Cameron gave New Paltz two on with no outs. Prescia was out at third on a fielder’s choice by Tommy Pinnola before a single by Matt Kaldon loaded the bases for New Paltz. Jimmy Briggs came through with a three-run triple to right field before the Hawks pushed two more runs across to take the 5-0 lead.
Grann had a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings but with the Cardinals’ down to their last out, Chris Pescetti ripped a single to left field to break up the no-hit bid. Casey Brighton followed with a single to left but Plattsburgh was unable to score, giving Grann and the Hawks their first conference win of the season.
Grann struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Greene allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out four. Brian Burns recorded the final two outs, giving up one hit.
Kaldon was 3-for-3 for New Paltz with a run scored while Chris Paulicelli chipped in two hits and an RBI.
