PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Casey Brighton’s two-out single in the bottom of the 10
th inning gave the Plattsburgh State baseball team a 3-2 win over New Paltz in its home opener Friday at Chip Cummings Field.
New Paltz (11-7, 0-1 SUNYAC) got on the board in the top of the second inning on a RBI double to right field by Jimmy Briggs.
Plattsburgh (10-6, 3-1 SUNYAC) pushed two runs across in the bottom of the third when Kris Cauchon scored on a wild pitch and Pat Shaughnessy scored on a double steal to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
The Hawks loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with three straight singles. A sacrifice fly by David Lostaglio brought the tying run home.
Thomas Pinnola was the only New Paltz player to pick up multiple hits, finishing the day with two. Seven different Cardinals had hits in the win.
Jon Handy singled to right field to start the Plattsburgh half of the 10
th. Groundouts by Matt Meunier and Chris Pescetti allowed Handy to advance to third before Brighton stepped to the plate to rip a single up the middle and send Plattsburgh home with a win.
Bobby Piser got the start for Plattsburgh, going 5 2/3 innings. Piser allowed nine hits and two runs while registering one strikeout. Mike Doughtie came in to toss 4 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win.
Chris Chismar took the mound for New Paltz, an earned run on three hits through six innings. Chismar walked four and struck out five. John Schmidt suffered the loss after surrendering one run on four hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Plattsburgh wraps up its three-game series against New Paltz tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
