FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team (5-6, 2-1 SUNYAC) held on for an 8-7 win against Fredonia State to take the three-game series to open its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule.
The Cardinals trailed 2-0 before scoring four runs in the second inning and added two more in the third.
In the second inning, Jon Handy doubled to center field to drive home Chris Pescetti for Plattsburgh's first run. Kris Cauchon hit a two-rin single to center field to score Handy and Casey Brighton. Later that inning, Cauchon scored on an RBI single to left by Pedro Gonzalez.
Pat Shaughnessy and MIke Mulvihill scored the following inning to give the Cardinals a 6-2 lead.
Fredonia scored two in the bottom of the third before tying it up at 6-6all in the bottom of the fifth.
The Cardinals regained the lead in the seventh after RBI singles from Brian Latulipe and Brighton.
Brighton led Plattsburgh with three hits and two RBIs. Cauchon also drove in two runs. Pescetti and Handy contributed two hits apiece.
Marc Plante threw the first four and one-third innings for Plattsburgh, allowing six runs - two of which were earned. He gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out three. Mike Doughtie came in for the final four and two-thirds innings to earn the win. Doughtie surrendered an unearned run on four hits and struck out seven.
Plattsburgh returns to non-conference action Thursday with a doubleheader against Lakeland College which is set to begin at 9 a.m.
