FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Plattsburgh State baseball team opened its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule with a doubleheader split against Fredonia State. The Cardinals (4-6, 1-1 SUNYAC) dropped game one, 8-3, before rebounding with an 8-1 victory in game two.
In game one, Mike Mulvihill scored on a single to right field by Pedro Gonzalez to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Cardinals held on to the lead until the bottom of the fifth when Fredonia would tie it up.
Bobby Piser got the start for Plattsburgh but was on the receiving of a no-decision. Piser allowed two earned runs and 12 hits. Steven Corea came on in relief of Piser and suffered the loss after surrending five runs on three hits in one inning of work.
Fredonia's Sean Larson scattered eight hits and struck out four over seven innings without allowing a walk. Grey picked up
the win with two innings of work allowing one run, striking out one and walking none.
Plattsburgh scored one run each in the seventh and eighth innings. Unfortunately for them, the Blue Devil (4-6, 1-1 SUNYAC) bats erupted for seven runs in the final two innings.
In Game 2, Plattsburgh used the dominant pitching of Tyler Greene to ride to the 8-1 victory. Greene scattered four hits and struck out six in a complete-game win.
Damian Tyler was 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Pat Shaughnessy finished the day with two RBIs while Mike Mulvihill added two hits.
The rubber match will be played at 3 p.m. on Thursday in Fort Myers.
