Baseball Opens Spring Trip with 2-4 Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla.  – The Plattsburgh State baseball team opened the 2012 season with a 2-4 weekend at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers.
 
Plattsburgh vs. Baruch: 8-10, 8-2

The Cardinals split their doubleheader against Baruch to kick-off the spring trip. In the first game of the year, Plattsburgh jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning scoring on a fielder’s choice and an RBI single from Damien Tyler.
 
Baruch plated five runs in the second, but the Cardinals answered with six of their own in the bottom of the inning. That lead held until the sixth inning when Baruch jumped on Plattsburgh reliever Brian Burns for two runs to take the lead.
 
Tyler Greene started for the Cardinals, giving up seven runs, four of which were earned on 10 hits. Greene walked one and struck out for in five innings of work. Burns came on in relief in the sixth and suffered the loss after surrendering two earned runs and five hits.
 
Pat Shaughnessy went 2-for-3 and was the only Cardinal to pick up multiple hits. Chris Pescetti and Damian Tyler each drove in two runs. The Cardinals finished with eight hits.
 
The second game brought a different outcome for Plattsburgh, which cruised to an 8-2 win. Bobby Piser tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits. Piser walked one and struck out five.
 
Mike Varques was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Damian Tyler had a two-run triple in the sixth for the Cardinals and also scored two runs. Kris Cauchon and Mike Mulvihill also picked up two hits in Plattsburgh’s first win of the season.
 
Plattsburgh vs. St. Joseph’s: 1-8, 12-5

The Cardinals dropped the first game again St. Joseph’s on Saturday as Mike Doughtie suffered the loss after allowed six runs, two earned in four and one-third innings pitched.
 
Damian Tyler provided all the offense for Plattsburgh in game one going 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the sixth inning. Pedro Gonzalez accounted for the only other Cardinal hit.
 
Plattsburgh responded with a 12-5 win in the second game as the Cardinals rapped out 16 hits. Damian Tyler drove in three more runs, going 2-for 4. Tyler picked up two hits while Kris Cauchon and Mike Mulvihill each went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Pat Shaughnessy, Casey Brighton and Jon Handy added two hits apiece.
 
Marc Plante pitched four innings for the win. He allows six hits, four earned runs while walking three and striking out three batters. Steven Corea earned his first save of the season with three scoreless innings of work.
 
Plattsburgh vs. Gettysburg: 4-5, 1-9

The Cardinals dropped a pair of games against Gettysburg Sunday. In the first game, trailing 1-0 in the third inning, Jon Handy singled to right field with two outs. Handy stole second and scored on a Pedro Gonzalez single to tie it up.
 
Plattsburgh took the lead in the top of the sixth after singles from Kris Cauchon and Damian Tyler put runners on first and third. Pat Shaughnessy brought home Cauchon on a squeeze play before Tyler scored on an RBI single by Mike Mulvihill. Shaughnessy would score on a fielder’s choice to give the Cardinals a 4-1 lead.
 
Casey Mohrien threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs. In the sixth inning, Mohrien gave up a triple and a sacrifice fly before hitting two Gettysburg batters to signal the end of his day. Brian Burns stepped in and couldn’t work his way out of the jam. Burns, who did not retire a batter, allowed two hits and an earned run.
 
The Cardinals were unable to rebound in the second game, falling 9-1. Matt Brown suffered the loss after allowed one hit, three runs and issuing four walks without recording an out.
 
Pat Shaughnessy tripled before scoring on a single by Damian Tyler to give Plattsburgh its only run of the game.
 
The Cardinals continue play tomorrow with a doubleheader against Principia.
