Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Even a return to the Field House Complex wasn’t enough to help the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team terminate a four-game losing skid as the Cardinals fell by a score of 3-0 to Fredonia State on Friday (Oct. 12).
Although it possessed a decisive advantage in corner kicks (10-2) over their SUNYAC foes, the Cardinals fell to 5-9-0 and 1-5-0 in league contests while the Blue Devils improved to 9-3-1 and 3-2-1 in conference confrontations.
The opportunistic Blue Devils were offensive-minded from the beginning as Reilly Condidorio tallied the first shot of the game just over two minutes after the opening whistle. After being outshot 4-0 in the opening 19:06 of the game, Kristie Pageau registered the first strike of the afternoon for the Cardinals, sending a ball just wide of the Blue Devils’ goal mouth.
Cassidy Clavet nearly gave the Cardinals the momentum first as the freshman broke free of the defensive corps of the Blue Devils late in the 23
rd minute. The Clifton Park, N.Y., product took an angle to the right of the goal before sending a hard show at Fredonia State netminder Meghan Meszaros that couldn’t find its way past the arms of the senior.
A little over three minutes later, the Blue Devils struck for the first time when Plattsburgh State’s defense got crossed up by Kristi Putzig and Katie Kleine. The pair performed a crossing pattern before Putzig pounded in her fourth goal of the season, sending a ball into the right section of the net past Danielle Schmitt.
A golden opportunity presented itself for the Cardinals in the 32
nd minute when they ambushed the Blue Devils time and time again in their own zone. From the 13:28 mark until the clock read 12:17 remaining in the first stanza, Plattsburgh State attempted four corner kicks, but couldn’t capitalize on any of them to knot things up. Lauren Gonyea had the best opportunity to put a shot home, but her header couldn’t sneak past Meszaros.
It didn’t take long after the deciding frame began for the Blue Devils to take a 2-0 advantage when Condodorio took a pass from Kleine and sent a short shot past Schmitt. In the 54
th minute, the Blue Devils added their third goal thanks to Kayla Stayer. Her shot was nearly turned away by Schmitt, but instead deflected off of the outstretched fingertips of the Washingtonville, N.Y., native and into the back of the net.
A nifty move by Pageau in minute 75 nearly put the Cardinals on the board, but her shot dribbled just wide of the net. In the 84
th minute of action, Taylor Florio took a hard shot at Meszaros after a Fredonia State foul, but again the Cardinals were kept off of the board.
Clavet led the way offensively for the Cardinals, taking three shots. Schmitt made one save on the afternoon while her counterpart turned away all four Plattsburgh State shots on net. Each team took 13 shots on the afternoon.
The Cardinals will compete in their final SUNYAC home game of the 2012 campaign on Saturday (Oct. 13) when they welcome Buffalo State to the Field House Complex. The game will begin at 1 p.m. and it will also be senior day. The four seniors on the Plattsburgh State squad – Renee Egan, Ashley McKenelley, Olivia Hopeck and Pageau – will be honored in a short ceremony prior to the start of the game.
