Boxscore

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Two power-play goals were enough for the visiting No. 8 Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team (9-3-1, 7-0-1 ECAC West) to outlast Potsdam (4-7-1, 2-7-1 ECAC West) 5-2 Friday in ECAC West action.

Despite falling behind early to Jenn Crawford's goal just 1:49 into the first period, the Cardinals rallied back with two goals of their own in the opening stanza.

Allison Era tied the game up six minutes into the period and Jordan Caldwell gave the Cardinals the lead for good just 52 seconds later. Shannon Stewart assisted on Era’s goal and Chelsea VanGlahn got the helper for Caldwell’s goal.

The Cardinals power-play took over in the next two periods, scoring two of the final three goals. The second period was played much tighter defensively. Neither team had many shots through the first 10 minutes and Teal Gove provided the breakthrough, scoring the first of two goals on the night. The goal came on the power-play after Potsdam was whistled for a tripping penalty. Alyssa Parke and Era were credited with assists on the goal.

The Bears fought their way back into the game in the third period. Jessica Silveira put one in after assists from Izzy Fayerman and Brittany Lucky. The Bears goal came just 1:10 into the third period and seemed to spark the Cardinals back into life.

Silveira was called for a checking penalty just a minute after her goal to give the Cardinals another power-play opportunity. Plattsburgh took full advantage of the power-play with Stewart tipping in a shot from Parke to score 3:18 into the third stanza to put the Cardinals back up by two. Era also collected another assist on the play. Gove then put the game beyond doubt with 42 seconds left in the game, scoring on a rebound from Stewart. Morgan McInnis was also awarded an assist on Gove’s ninth goal of the season.

The Cardinals outshot the Bears in every period, resulting in a final shot count of 49-18 in favor of the visitors. Sydney Aveson finished with 16 saves for the win and Bears goalie Jen Conophy stopped 44 shots in a losing effort.

The Cardinals return to action Friday January 13 at 7 p.m. as they host a rematch of last year’s ECAC West Championship game against R.I.T.
