POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team shutout the Potsdam Bears 3-0 Saturday afternoon to secure its first win in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.
The Bears (3-2-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) gave the Cardinals some help in the eighth minute of play when a Potsdam defender failed to clear the ball off of Leigh Metcalf’s corner kick, knocking the ball into the Potsdam net and giving Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead.
Plattsburgh (3-2-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) scored two quick goals early in the second half. Renee Egan struck first at 49:25 with Metcalf picking up an assist on the goal. Emily LaLone found the back of the net 2:23 minutes later from Lindsey Keyser to give the Cardinals a three-goal lead.
The Cardinals dominated much of the play, finishing the day with a 25-2 edge in shots and a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Despite allowing three goals, freshman goalie Katrina Rowland gave Potsdam a strong outing with 11 saves. Cardinal keeper Danielle Schmitt recorded two saves in her second shutout of the year.
Plattsburgh returns to conference play next weekend at Cortland and Oswego. The Cardinals will take on the Red Dragons Friday at 4 p.m. followed by a 1p.m. contest against the Lakers on Saturday afternoon.
