PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– The Plattsburgh State baseball team took each end of a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) doubleheader against Fredonia State, winning each game by a final score of 2-1.

Plattsburgh (9-12, 4-4 SUNYAC) took a 1-0 lead in game one when Brandon Cross knocked a single to left field in the bottom of the third, bringing home Anthony Presto.

Fredonia’s Joe Kephart drew a lead-off walk in the sixth before stealing second and third.  Kephart scored on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, Casey Brighton singled with one out to get things going for the Cardinals.  Jon Handy, who came into the game as a pinch-runner for Brighton, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Crockett Pack.

After a hit batter and a wild pitch, Anthony Presto stepped to the plate with runners on second and third.  Presto singled through the right side, driving home the winning run.

Paul Handy received a no-decision despite a strong outing on the mound.  Handy held the Blue Devils to three hits and one run in 7 1-3 innings of work.  Mike Doughtie was credited with the win after throwing a scoreless 1 2-3 innings of relief.

Angelo Sciandra started game one for Fredonia, scattering seven hits and allowing one run over 7 1-3 innings.  Sean Larson suffered the loss, giving up two hits and one run in 1 1-3 innings.

Much like the game one, runs were at a premium in the back end of the doubleheader.

The Cardinals scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third inning.  With one out, Brandon Cross tripled to left center.  Two batters later, Donny Coolidge doubled to left center allowing Cross to score.  Pat Shaughnessy followed with an RBI single up the middle.

Fredonia (11-11, 0-7 SUNYAC) scored their only run in the fifth on an RBI single from Tom Dee.

Bobby Piser improved to 2-2, allowing five hits and one run before exiting in the fifth.  Matt Seymour gave Plattsburgh 2 2-3 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first save of the season.

Andy Dlugosz suffered the loss, giving up six hits and two runs over six innings.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow at Chip Cummings Field.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.
