Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short as Cortland defeats Plattsburgh, 3-1

Boxscore and Play-by-Play

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– The Plattsburgh State baseball team got the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth but its rally fell short as Cortland held on to defeat the Cardinals, 3-1, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) baseball action.

Casey Brighton opened the bottom of the ninth with a single to right center before advancing to second on a ground out.  Brandon Cross singled, setting up runners on the corners for Crockett Pack.  Pack singled to left, driving home Brighton and putting the tying run on base.

Tom Nagy came on in relief for Cortland, to retire the final two batters and earn his third save.

The Cardinals got nine hits off the Red Dragon’s starter, Mike Assmann over 8 1/3 innings, but struggled to get a key hit, leaving eight runners on base.

Dan Tracy took the mound for the Cardinals, going eight innings and allowing eight hits and three earned runs.  Matt Seymour pitched a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit.

Tom Panetta went 2-for-3 for Cortland.  Matt June went 1-for-3 with a two-run triple in third.  Dan Kaplan drove home the third run for the Red Dragons in the fourth.

The Cardinals (7-12, 2-4 SUNYAC) return to action tomorrow at noon with a SUNYAC doubleheader against Fredonia State at Chip Cummings Field.
