PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Strong pitching performances told the story Thursday as the Plattsburgh State baseball team dropped a pair of conference games to Cortland at Chip Cummings Field.
Cortland (14-5, 6-0 SUNYAC) grabbed an early in game one on an RBI single by Nick Thode, scoring John Adornetto. Thode drove in two more runs in the third inning on a single up the middle.
The Cardinals staged a rally in the bottom of the third as Donny Coolidge stepped to the plate with two men aboard. Coolidge singled to right field to drive home Anthony Presto and Jeremy Peet, cutting the Cortland lead to 3-2.
The Red Dragons received a solid pitching performance from junior Aaron Schuldt. Schuldt went 8 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs, two walks and striking out nine. Brendan Hourihan came in to record the final out and pick up his first save. Cortland pitching held the Cardinals hitless after the third inning.
Marc Plante took the mound for Plattsburgh, giving up six hits, three earned runs and five walks in 5 2/3 innings. Brian Burns threw a scoreless 3 1/3 innings in relief.
Plattsburgh (7-11, 2-3 SUNYAC) could not solve Cortland’s Travis Ratliff in game two. Ratliff threw a no-hitter in seven innings and fanned eight.
Cortland scored the lone run in the first inning, with Thode powering the offense again in game two. Thode went 2-for-3 with an RBI double, driving in all four Cortland runs on the afternoon.
The Cardinals sent four pitchers to the mound with Bobby Piser getting the start. Piser allowed two hits and an earned run in two innings of work. Paul Handy and Tyler Greene each threw two innings of scoreless relief, while Mike Doughtie did not allow a run in the seventh.
The Cardinals will host Cortland for the final game of their three-game series tomorrow at Chip Cummings Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
