Baseball Falls in Extras at Oneonta, 6-5

ONEONTA, N.Y.
– The Plattsburgh State baseball team suffered a tough loss at Oneonta, falling 6-5 in 12 innings in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

The Cardinals (12-17, 5-8 SUNYAC) jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the first when Pat Shaughnessy rapped a two-run double to left field, but Oneonta got one back in the bottom of the inning and tied up the game at 2-2 in the second.

The Red Dragons (20-8, 11-1 SUNYAC) took a three-run lead in the fourth with RBIs from Michael Center, Kevin Knack and Bryan Marotta.

Plattsburgh rallied for three runs in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.  Anthony Presto drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Brandon Cross.  Crockett Pack scored on a sacrifice fly before Kris Cauchon drove home the tying run with a single to right field.

The two teams locked into a pitcher’s duel for the next six innings, before Knack drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning off Cardinals’ pitcher Steven Corea.

Brian Burns got the start for Plattsburgh, going 3 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on five hits.  Paul Handy recorded the final two outs of the fourth, allowing one hit.  Corea came out of the bullpen to give the Cardinals a solid relief outing, allowing just the one run on five hits in 7 2/3 innings.

Oneonta sent three pitchers to the mound.  Jeffrey Carter allowed five runs in the first five innings.  Corey Andresen threw a scoreless 2 2/3 innings before being relieved by Chris Tyson who was credited with the win.

The Cardinals will have a quick turnaround as they continue conference play tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader against Oswego State.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Chip Cummings Field.
