PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team snapped its four-game losing streak by taking both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against Clarkson University, winning 3-2 and 7-2.
In game one, Clarkson got on the board first, scoring two runs on RBIs from Justin McInerney and Sam Grainger.
The Cardinals (12-16) rallied for three runs in the fifth to take the lead. Crockett Pack led off the inning with a single up the middle. Jon Handy received a free pass before Jeremy Peet reached on a fielder’s choice, bringing Kris Cauchon to the plate. Cauchon reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, allowing Pack to score the first Cardinal run.
Danny Roeser drove in a run later in the inning on a single through the left side. With the bases loaded, Donny Coolidge was hit by a pitch, leading to Plattsburgh’s third run.
Matt Seymour threw the first two innings for the Cardinals, allowing two runs on five hits. Casey Mohrien gave Plattsburgh a great effort out of the bullpen, giving up just two hits in five scoreless innings.
The Golden Knights (13-9) sent three pitchers to the mound with Bryan Chudy getting the start. Chudy allowed one hit in three innings before being replaced by Jarrod Mattingly. Mattingly suffered the loss, allowing three runs – two of which were earned, on two hits. Anthony Farrell also added an inning of scoreless relief.
Clarkson also jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring one in the first and one in the third, before costly errors allowed the Cardinals to take charge.
The Golden Knights committed three errors in the bottom of the third, allowing the Cardinals to plate five runs.
Vincent Baldwin suffered the loss for Clarkson, allowing six runs – just one of which was earned.
Tyler Greene took the mound for Plattsburgh giving up one run on one hit in two innings of work. Paul Handy was credited with the win, allowing one run in three innings. Steven Corea and Brian Burns each added an inning of scoreless relief.
Coolidge went 4-for-6 with two RBI on the afternoon. Patrick Quinn drove home two runs in game two, going 1-for-2.
The Cardinals return to action Thursday for a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at Oneonta. First pitch is schedule for 2:30 p.m.
