Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Oneonta State

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– The Plattsburgh State baseball team dropped a pair of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games against Oneonta State earlier today at Chip Cummings Field.

The Red Dragons (17-8, 10-1 SUNYAC) took game one, 7-2, powered by a 4-for-4 afternoon from catcher Bryan Marotta.  Marotta drove in three runs with a run scored.  Shortstop Kevin Knack went 3-for-4 with two triples, two RBIs and scored three runs.

The Cardinals (10-15, 5-6 SUNYAC) scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Pat Shaughnessy knocked an RBI triple to center field, scoring Brandon Cross.  Casey Brighton followed with an RBI single to bring home Shaughnessy.

Oneonta’s Ken Smith did not allow a run after the first, throwing a seven-inning complete game, giving up five hits and issuing three walks while striking out six.

Tyler Greene took the mound for the Cardinals allowing seven runs – four of them earned, in 3 2/3 innings.  Mike Doughtie pitched two scoreless innings of relief before exiting after being struck by a line drive on the ankle.  Casey Mohrien threw the final 1 1/3 innings and did not allow a hit while fanning two.

Plattsburgh was unable to get a big hit in the second game of the afternoon, falling 5-1, to Oneonta.  Despite rapping 10 hits, the Cardinals left 11 men on base.

Cody Hitt went 1-for 3, driving in two runs for the Red Dragons. Jon Wolfanger went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.  

On the Plattsburgh side, Shaughnessy led off the bottom of the eighth with a double to right center.  Shaughnessy advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Crockett Pack RBI single.

Danny Roeser went 3-for-5 and Pack went 2-for-3, driving in the only Cardinal run of the game.

Joshua Herzenberg allowed one run in 8 2/3 innings of work for Oneonta.  Chris Tyson came on in relief in the ninth to record the final out.

Paul Handy suffered the loss for the Cardinals, throwing a complete game and allowing 10 hits and five runs while striking out three.

Plattsburgh continues conference play this weekend at Brockport.  The two teams are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday also scheduled for noon.
