Cardinals Complete Series Sweep of Fredonia with 8-1 Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.
– The Plattsburgh State baseball team set the tone early, plating five runs in the first inning en route to an 8-1 win over Fredonia State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at Chip Cummings Field.

The Cardinals (10-12, 5-4 SUNYAC) had five extra-base hits in the Plattsburgh first.  Brandon Cross led off with a triple to center field.  Donny Coolidge doubled to right field, bringing home Cross for the Cardinals first run.  Casey Brighton, Crockett Pack and Anthony Presto each added RBI doubles in the inning, while Danny Roeser also drove home a run on a ground out to the shortstop.

Tom Dee scored the Blue Devils (11-12, 0-8 SUNYAC) lone run in the fourth inning.  Dee stole second following a lead-off walk and came around to score on Taylor Gahagen’s double to left center.

Pat Shaughnessy had a stellar day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored.  Shaughnessy hit a solo home run in the fifth to stretch the Plattsburgh lead to 6-1 and give the Cardinals their first long ball of the season.

The Cardinals, who have struggled at the plate, rapped out 13 hits on the afternoon.

Tyler Greene threw six innings of one-run ball for the Cardinals, improving his record to 2-2 with the win.  Brian Burns and Casey Mohrien combined for three innings of scoreless relief.

Brian Lansing only lasted one inning for the Blue Devils, suffering the loss after surrendering five runs on five hits with one walk.  Steve Sturm, Zach Murray and Dan Greco allowed a combined three runs on eight hits in seven innings of relief work.

Plattsburgh takes a break from conference play on Tuesday, April 12 as the travel to Saint Lawrence University for a non-conference game set for 4 p.m.
