Plattsburgh Takes Two of Three against New Paltz in SUNYAC Opener

CHESTER, N.Y.
– The Plattsburgh State baseball team opened its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule Tuesday, taking two of three games against New Paltz at The Rock Sports Park.  

The Cardinals (7-9, 2-1 SUNYAC) dropped the first game of the day, 5-1, before winning back-to-back game to close out a long day of baseball against the Hawks.

In the first game, Paul Handy pitched eight innings in the loss, giving up five hits and five runs – four of which were earned.  He struck out four and issued two walks.

The Hawks (9-6, 1-0 SUNYAC) scored three runs in the first and two in the fifth en route to the win.  Michael Pinnola earned his second win, allowing one run and four hits in seven innings pitched.

Plattsburgh’s lone run came in the fifth inning. Danny Roeser opened the inning with a triple to right field and later scored on a ground out to the shortstop by Casey Brighton.

The Cardinals bounced back with a 6-3 win in extra innings in game two.  Plattsburgh scored a run in the first, second and fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead.  New Paltz plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up.  

In the top of the eighth inning, Pat Shaughnessy, Jon Handy and Crockett Pack hit three straight doubles, each driving in a run.  Handy went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Four pitchers took the mound for the Cardinals.  Bobby Piser got the start for Plattsburgh, going 5.2 innings and allowing five hits, three runs, four walks and striking out two.  Brian Burns held the Hawks scoreless in the final 1.2 innings and was credited with the win.

In the final game of the afternoon, Tyler Greene gave the Cardinals seven innings of shutout baseball to help Plattsburgh to a 2-0 win over New Paltz.

The Hawks committed two errors in the fifth innings, leading to two Plattsburgh runs.  Shaughnessy and Damien Tyler had the Cardinals’ only hits against New Paltz pitcher Andrew Grann.  

Greene allowed five hits and issued two walks while fanning five to improve to 1-2.  Mike Doughtie came on in relief to pitch the final two innings and allowed just one hit to pick up his first save of the season.
