PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team went 1-1 on Tuesday in games against Heidelberg University and Utica College in the Snowbird Classic.
Plattsburgh 0, Heidelberg 4
Pat Shaughnessy went 3-for-3 but the Cardinals struggled to muster any offense against the top team in the country in Heidelberg University, falling 4-0, in their first game of the day.
Shaughnessy was responsible for three of the Cardinals’ five hits. Casey Brighton and Brandon Cross each added singles, but Plattsburgh struggled to get a big hit, stranding seven runners.
Marc Plante got the start for the Cardinals, going six innings and giving up five hits and two earned runs.
“Plante gave us a tremendous effort on the mound today,” said Plattsburgh State Head Coach Kris Doorey. “To limit the best team in the nation to two runs through six innings and get a loss in a tough day of work.”
Brian Burns and Matt Seymour each gave Plattsburgh an inning of relief, with Burns surrendering two runs on four hits to Heidelberg.
Ricardo Lizcano led Heidelberg, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sylvester Nino earned the win with seven scoreless innings of work. Nino gave up four hits, issued three walks and struck out eight.
Plattsburgh 9, Utica 7
The Plattsburgh offense had a much better showing in the second game of the day as the Cardinals picked up a 9-7 over Utica College.
The Cardinals (4-4) put two runs on the board in the third inning. Donny Coolidge doubled to left field and came around to score on a single by Damien Tyler. Pat Shaughnessy walked and stole second to get into scoring position. Crockett Pack drove him with a double down the left field line.
Utica tied the game up in the fifth, but Plattsburgh scored seven runs in the final three frames en route to the win.
Tyler went 3-for-6 with three RBI. Pack and Casey Brighton knocked in two runs apiece. Donny Coolidge had two hits in four plate appearances and scored three runs.
Plattsburgh used five pitchers to get the victory. Bobby Piser pitched the first six innings and received a no-decision, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out four. Kyle Kelly was credited with the win in 1.2 innings of relief, surrendering one hit and an unearned run. Danny Roeser recorded the final out for his first save of the season.
“We received a lot of contributions up and down the line up,” added Doorey. “We still have a lot of work to do, but we seem to be getting better at doing the little things.”
The Cardinals are off tomorrow and will return to action on Thursday against North Park University at 4 p.m. in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.
