PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With just under 14 minutes remaining in Friday night’s ECAC Women’s West Division matchup, the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team found itself in an unfamiliar position – down four goals to a Neumann team they had never lost to. But the offense, sparked by Erika Shaubel’s power-play goal at 7:17 of the third, rattled off four unanswered goals as Plattsburgh battled back to come away with a 5-5 tie against Neumann at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Knights (0-0-1, 0-0-1 ECAC West) got on the board first with goal from Lynsey Nakamura at 15:01 of the first period. Edie Brenning and Kayla Dubowski picked up assists on the goal.
Chelsea VanGlahn answered back at 16:49 to tie it at 1-1 but Neumann’s Diane Peters found the back of the net in the final minute of the period to send the Knights to the locker room with a 2-1 lead.
It was all Neumann in the second period as Brenning and Amanda Simpson tallied their first goals of the year, giving the Knights a three-goal lead after two periods of play.
With 6:08 gone in the third period, Neumann appeared to have the game in hand as Olivia Pryzbylkowski netted a power-play goal to stretch the lead to 5-1.
Just over a minute later, Shaubel fired a shot from the point past Neumann goaltender Shannon Donnelly. Twenty seconds later, Plattsburgh (1-0-1, 1-0-1 ECAC West) struck again as Emma Rutherford buried a loose puck in the front of the net and cut the Neumann lead to 5-3.
Teal Gove brought the Cardinals within one, scoring a short-handed goal on a breakaway at 12:34 of the third. As momentum started to swing in favor of the Cardinals, they pulled goaltender Ally Ross with 1:03 left for the extra-attacker. The plan worked as Gove evened the score with just 14 seconds left from Jenny Kistner and Allison Era.
Despite the final score, Plattsburgh finished the night dominating Neumann in shots, 54-14. Donnelly recorded 49 saves, including 18 in the second period alone. Sydney Aveson got the start for the Cardinals, allowing two goals and making two stops in the first period. Kelsey Neumann allowed two goals and recorded one save in the first 4:57 of the second period before Ally Ross stepped in between the pipes. Ross stopped six shots and allowed one goal in the final 39:14.
The two teams wrap up their weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.
