PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team saw a frustrating weekend come to a close Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals fell to Middlebury, 4-1, in the third-place game of the Cardinal-Panther Classic.
Plattsburgh (5-2-1, 4-0-1 ECAC West) took its only lead of the game at 8:13 of the first as freshman Ashton Hogan netted her third of the season. At 16:19, Middlebury’s Madeline Joyce ripped a shot from the right circle and beat Plattsburgh netminder Kelsey Neumann on the far side to tie the game at 1-1.
Maggie Woodward scored the eventual game-winner with 44 seconds left in the first period on a deflection in front of the net. Sara Ugalde and Hannah Bielawski assisted on the Panthers’ power-play goal.
Woodward also tallied the only goal of the second period, putting Middlebury (3-0-1, 2-0-0 NESCAC) up 3-1 at the 3:56 mark from Jennifer Krakowe.
Grace Waters made it 4-1 at 11:53 of the third period with a power-play goal for her first of the year. Heather Marrison took a shot from the point and Waters was able to get a stick on the puck, deflecting it past Plattsburgh goalie Sydney Aveson.
Annabelle Jones allowed one goal on 25 shots to improve to 2-0-1. Neumann made 11 stops in the first 24:59 for Plattsburgh. Aveson recorded 13 saves after taking over between the pipes for the Cardinals.
Uncharacteristic of the Cardinals, Plattsburgh took four penalties for 11 minutes in the final period. The Panthers finished the afternoon going 2-for-6 on the power-play, while the Cardinals were 0-for-1
Plattsburgh will look to rebound next weekend as the team return to conference play. The Cardinals will host Buffalo State for a two-game series beginning Saturday at 3 p.m.
