PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The first two periods of the Cardinals’ season opener were too close for comfort, but the floodgates opened in the final 20 minutes as the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team skated to a 5-0 win over Potsdam in Saturday’s ECAC Women’s West Division game at the Stafford Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period, freshman defenseman Alyssa Parke put Plattsburgh on the board with a power-play goal from Teal Gove and Ashton Hogan at 9:56 of the second.
Sophomore transfer Jenny Kistner found the back of the net twice for the Cardinals in the third period, while newcomers Emma Rutherford and Ashton Hogan both tallied goals in the final stanza.
Gove, Hogan and Kistner finished the evening with two points apiece.
Plattsburgh (1-0-0, 1-0-0 ECAC West) held a commanding 49-18 edge in shots on goal. The Cardinals went 2-for-6 on the power play while the Bears were unable to cash in their five opportunities.
Potsdam goaltender Jen Conophy turned away 44 shots in the loss. Plattsburgh’s Sydney Aveson recording 18 saves in the shutout.
The Cardinals return to action next weekend as they host Neumann for a two-game series beginning Friday night at 7 p.m.
