PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team attempted to rally in the second half, but its effort fell short as Geneseo defeated the Cardinals 2-1 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup.
The Cardinals fall to 6-5-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference. The Blue Knights improve to 11-4-1 and 4-3-1 against SUNYAC opponents.
Geneseo’s leading scorer Anne Beinetti scored off a corner kick in the 19
th minute to give the Blue Knights a 1-0 lead.
At the 49:34 mark, Kelly Bergin scored on a rebound off the post to stretch the Geneseo lead to 2-0. Shannon Spusta was credited with an assist on the goal.
Renee Egan cut the lead to 2-1, scoring her second of the year in the 55
th minute to put Plattsburgh on the board. Danielle Weimer picked up an assist on Egan’s goal.
Alina Greiser suffered the loss, making one save in the Cardinals’ goal. Julia Sanger recorded three saves on four shots to improve to 10-4-1.
The Cardinals outshot the Blue Knights, 13-5, including a 10-4 edge in the second half. Geneseo took five corner kicks, while Plattsburgh took three on the day.
Plattsburgh is tied for fifth place in the SUNYAC standing heading into the final day of conference play. The Cardinals return to action tomorrow on Senior Day against Brockport at 1 p.m.
