PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Lauren Gonyea’s first goal of the season in the 42nd minute put the Cardinals ahead for good, as the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team defeated Castleton State, 2-1, in their home opener. The Cardinals improve to 5-1, while the Spartans fall to 3-2 on the season.
Castleton State took a 1-0 lead at 30:32 on Hilary Cooke’s fourth goal of the season from Meryssa Wacholder. The Cardinals answered six minutes later when Kayla Rabideau scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season off a corner kick by Akino Funayama. Olivia Hopeck picked up an assist for Plattsburgh on Gonyea’s game-winner that followed at 42:03.
Castleton State goalkeeper Ericka Davis made 11 saves, taking the loss. Plattsburgh’s Alina Greiser recorded her fifth win with two saves.
The Cardinals held the advantage in shots, 27-6. Plattsburgh took seven corner kicks in the first half and two in the second for a total of nine compared to the Spartans lone corner of the evening, which occurred in the first half.
Plattsburgh begins conference play on Friday, September 24 at 4 p.m. as the team hits the road to face Brockport.
