CORTLAND, N.Y.--Tory Bouyea and Donny Coolidge paced a Plattsburgh State 13-hit attack with three apiece, but the College at Brockport hammered Cardinals pitching for 16 hits in a 14-9 slugfest victory Friday in the opening game of the State University of New York Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Wallace Field. Plattsburgh will play host Cortland--which was upset 7-1 by No. 4 seed Oneonta in the later game this afternoon--in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The nationally No. 26-ranked Cardinals, who are the second seed in the four-team tournament, fall to 30-9 after seeing their four-game win streak come to an end. The No. 3-seeded Golden Eagles improve to 22-16, and will face Oneonta in the winners' bracket tomorrow afternoon.
Max Keado led Brockport with a 4-for-6 performance at the plate with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Joe Zaccardo and Jeff Jones each added three hits and four RBI.
Brockport took a 7-1 lead after 1-1/2 innings of play, but the Cardinals eventually tied it at 7-all. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Andrew Baio had a sacrifice fly and Casey Brighton scored on a drop fly ball by the center fielder to get back Plattsburgh back from an early six-run deficit.
However, the Golden Eagles scored three times in the sixth to stay ahead for good, 10-7.
Plattsburgh scored in each of the first six innings but the offense was shut down during the final three frames by reliever Brian Wolf, who allowed just two hits in 3.2 innings for his first save of the season.
