Twinbill Sweep Gives Cardinals First 30-Win Campaign

Tracy, Bouyea set school records

Mike Doughtie records first career save to preserve sweep
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Dan Tracy improved to 9-0 in the first game, Tory Bouyea set the Plattsburgh State single-season hits record and Pat Shaughnessy went 6-for-8 with five runs batted in on the afternoon as the Cardinals swept a non-conference doubleheader from Saint Michael's, 11-1 and 11-10, at Chip Cummings Field on Saturday.

The Cardinals, who are nationally-ranked No. 23 in the NCAA Division III coaches' poll, closed the regular season on a four-game win streak and improved to 30-8 overall--the first 30-win season in the program's history. The Division II Purple Knights drop to 6-27-1.

On a day of record-setting performances, Tracy worked six innings while allowing five hits, an earned run and a walk with two strikeouts. The sophomore right-hander is now 14-0 for his career, tying Dan Hoffman (2004-06) and Paul Dingman (1966-69) for the most Cardinal wins all-time. Tyler Greene pitched three scoreless innings to earn his second save.

The Cardinals' pitching staff was supported by a 12-hit attack, including Shaughnessy with three and three RBI, Matt Burns and Andrew Gooch had two apiece.

Holding a slim 2-1 lead going into the fifth inning, the Cardinals scored four times for some breathing room and then blew it open with five more in the sixth.

In the nightcap, Mike Doughtie got the final two outs to earn his first career save to preserve a Cardinals win in which the hosts led 10-4 after four innings. The Purple Knights scored four runs in the top of the ninth to pull within 11-10, but the freshman got a strikeout and induced a foul out to stop the rally with runners left on at second and third base.

Tied 3-3 going into the home third inning, the Cardinals went ahead for good when they crossed the plate four times. Shaughnessy delivered a two-run double to left center to break the deadlock.

Both teams rapped 14 hits. Bouyea went 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored, Shaughnessy had three hits and two RBI, and Danny Roeser went 3-for-3 with two runs driven in. Kris Cauchon added two hits.

Bouyea finished the day with four hits, giving him 57 for the season to break the previous team record of 55 shared by Zack Welch (2007, 2008) and Matt Kahan (2005).

Shaughnessy had eight more total bases to extend his single-season club mark of 86.

Shaughnessy (46), Bouyea (45) and Anthony Presto (43) scored runs today and have all surpassed the previous single-season Cardinals record of 38 by Welch, set in 2005.
