Plattsburgh Sweeps Brockport in Pair of SUNYAC Extra-Inning Affairs

Johnston Wins both Games in Relief

Johnston works 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to move to 4-1

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.– Plattsburgh State swept the College at Brockport in a State University of New York Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Monday at Chip Cummings, taking the opener 7-6 in 10 innings and the nightcap 4-3 in 11. The nationally ranked Cardinals (No. 18 ABCA) improve to 24-6 overall, including 5-3 for sole possession of second place in the SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles drop to 16-13 and 4-5 in the conference.

Relief pitcher Corey Johnston picked up both wins in pressure-packed situations. Johnston entered Game 1 in the top of the 10th inheriting runners at first and second with one out, and escaped the jam by getting Steve Boronczyk to pop out to short stop and Jeff Jones to fly out to right field.

Then in the home half of the frame, the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out. Kris Cauchon singled home the game-winning run to the pitcher when he slipped on the grass moving to his right trying to field the ball.

Donny Coolidge led the Cardinals offensively by going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored.  Matt Burns added two hits.

Brockport outhit Plattsburgh 13-8 in the first game and 14-9 in the second, but committed nine errors that led to eight unearned runs for the Cardinals.

Mike Weakley went 4-for-5 with two RBI for the Golden Eagles, who trailed 5-1 at one point. Nathan Parrino and Jones had two hits apiece, with Parrino knocking in two runs.

Johnston worked three scoreless innings and allowed just two hits in the second game, which he entered in the ninth of a 3-3 game with one out while inheriting two runners on base.  He got the final two outs on a foul out and strikeout.

The Cardinals had the bases loaded in the 11th when Brockport tried to turn a 6-4-3 double-play to force a 12th-inning, but pinch-runner Justin Mahan scored the game-winning run from third when Tory Bouyea was ruled safe at first base on a fielder's choice.

Anthony Presto led Plattsburgh with three hits, followed by Bouyea with two and two RBI.

Weakley rapped four hits again for the Golden Eagles, who had taken a 2-0 lead after four until the Cardinals scored three times in the fifth. Max Keado, Boronczyk and Jones each contributed two hits.
